Moose Camp 2027

Learn, Laugh, and Level Up Your Clown!

Mornings are for a deep dive course. Afternoons are for workshops you pick on the fly. Here is everything on the menu for 2027!

Rob Balchunas, a.k.a. Rob the Balloon Guy, is an award-winning artist and performer who combines balloons, magic, and comedy in ways you’ve never seen before. He twisted his first balloon dog at age four and performed his first birthday party at eight. Since then, balloons have taken him around the world, onto television, and into Emerson College in Boston. His sculptures have earned top industry honors, including Top Twister (2011) and Designer of the Year (2013).

Morning Course: Intermediate to Advanced Balloons

Balloons are magical things; with a little latex, some puffs of air, and a strategic twist or two, you can create joy and wonder! Adding hearts, rounds, 360’s, and other balloons can take your sculpting to the next level that wows everyone. Rob has 35 years of experience in balloons and is ready to lead you in a hands-on course that goes beyond the basic dog, sword, or flower to easy but impressive multi balloon sculptures; to bracelets, headbands, and wearables that impress; to over the top twisting art; and to magical moments with every twist.

* This is an advanced course and all clowns participating should have a solid foundation of balloon skills.

Afternoon Workshops

  • Beyond a Single Balloon: Adding a second balloon can take your creations to another level, and add some real wow factor!
  • Fun, Gags, and Games with Balloons: This workshop will show you fun ways to entertain with balloons. You’ll learn how to add some pizzazz to your balloon making.
  • That’s the Best Balloons I’ve Ever Seen!: From cute headbands to large ride-inside sculptures, learn some impressive, show stopping pieces that people talk about and remember.
  • Balloon Decor, With a Twist!: Want to make more money with balloons? Tie some round balloons together and learn the best ways to construct easy balloon decorations that you can upsell for events.

2027 Main Courses

Choose one. You will stay in it every morning all week.

Balloons are magical things; with a little latex, some puffs of air, and a strategic twist or two, you can create joy and wonder! Adding hearts, rounds, 360s, and other balloons can take your sculpting to a level that really wows everyone. Rob has 35+ years of experience in balloons and is ready to lead you in a hands-on course that goes beyond the basic dog, sword, or flower to easy but impressive multi balloon sculptures; to bracelets, headbands, and wearables that impress; to over the top twisting art; and to magical moments with every twist.

Note: This course is not for beginners. You must have the basics of balloons down and be ready to take your twisting to the next level. Bring your own balloons, and a pump if possible.

Success in a hospital, nursing home, shelter, or other care facility often depends on what you do (and don’t do), the props and skills you bring with you, and how you relate to and interact with the patient, family, and staff. In this course, Brittany will discuss these things, and share techniques, tips, and the props you can use for your Caring Clown visits, as well as some ideas on clowning for this special audience. She will also share how to approach facilities, how to build a partnership with them, and how to present a professional proposal for an ongoing program. This course includes a visit with residents in a local care facility, with Brittany supervising visits. It creates the perfect safe and supportive environment to reach out as a clown who truly cares.

Note: It is recommended that you have the basics of clown make-up and character in place before launching into this specialized field. Please bring any skills you may want to share: musical instruments, puppets, juggling, magic tricks, songs, or jokes.

At its core, what makes up your clown character? Who your clown is, what it looks like, how it moves, its personality, and what it does are all part of the elements that make up your clown character. But to be real, that character has to be connected to a part of you. Karen will take you through steps and exercises that will help you discover and develop the various elements of your character, knit them together, and then apply those things (along with various clown skills) to a performance that is uniquely you.

Learn the funny art of clowning from the ground up. Julia, Annette, Rick, and Mike will gently introduce you to make-up, costuming, character development, and performance skills. Their holistic approach will seamlessly interweave the skills that will start you on the road toward being a great clown. Their sharing-and-caring style will teach you volumes in a short time! When you leave Moose Camp, you will have all the basics you need to begin your new life as a clown. If you have never put on make-up before, then Clowning 101 is the right course for you!

Materials fee: There is a materials fee to buy the recommended makeup kit. The kit contains all the necessary items to create both auguste and whiteface clown characters. We tried our best to put only the bare essentials in the kit and keep it low cost. The kit we put together for you will be much cheaper than buying the same make-up separately in the Dealers Room. For the health of our campers, we do not offer and do not recommend communal use makeup. There will be mirrors, containers of Q-tips, and wet-wipes available for your use at the makeup tables.

Unless you’ve booked a stage show, fairs, festivals, and events often require working on the move. From sight gags, to stop gags, to pocket gags (stuff you carry on you), to interactive BOBs (Bits of Business), Flo will share not just some possible props, but tips on presenting them, working the audience, patter, and so much more that will help you prepare for your next fair, festival, parade, roving event, or other venue. She will cover promo material, contacts, contracts, and other pertinent information. This course may include a Friday afternoon visit to a small, local fair, with Flo alongside you, to put into practice what you have been working on.

A clown is rarely static, even when not in motion. Besides movement, mime, music, and dance, there’s pacing, looks and takes, actions and reactions, and partner work (even when that partner is the audience). It’s all part of the SOMETHING that makes clowns physically funny. Add to that your basic entrances and exits, then throw in some prop work and character development, and without a single slap or fall you’ll get more physical comedy into your clowning. Karen will introduce you to exercises and games that will help bring out the fun and funny that is already in you, to make play part of your clowning regardless of your venue.

If you are looking to improve your clowning at events or parties; in parades, circuses, or hospitals; working in skits with others or performing on your own, we have just the course for you. Fred will use several different approaches to explore various ways of performing, as well as share many props and tricks that bring on giggling fits for audiences of all ages. He has a wealth of knowledge and experience performing as a clown and magician that he is ready to share with you. This is an in depth course that will help you get the laughter you are after one-on-one, on a big stage, or anywhere in between.

What’s the use of a box full of clown tools if you don’t know how to use them? Whether your adventure in clowning takes you to birthday parties, corporate events, big shows and circus, or anything in between, knowing when, where, and how to use the tools at your disposal will get you booked time and again. Rex will work with you to incorporate your current skill set into your clowning and explore new skills and new presentations of old skills to take your clowning to the next level. Juggling, music, magic, and more will be explored with a focus on fun, comedy, and performing presence. As a bonus, Rex will share tips on how to bring your skills to bear when things don’t go according to plan.

Course requirement: This is NOT a beginner course. You should have a firm foundation in clowning and be open to being pushed in new directions.

2027 Afternoon Workshops

Branding and Marketing Made Easy
The branding and marketing for your clown, business, or club can be simple, especially if you are just starting with all of that. Come learn the 6 most important things to do to make it work for you, your clients, and your audience. From your first impression to your final thank-you card, I’ll share basic, yet critical tips for self-promotion and presentation. We’ll talk about what’s important to help your business shine, from business cards and coloring sheets to social media.

Puppets Alive
Your puppet is little more than foam, fabric, and feathers unless (or until) you breathe some life into it. Brittany will share how she adds character, personality, and movement to bring her puppet pal sidekicks to life and have them relate to the audience and vice versa. If you have a puppet, bring it, but you can come alone too!

Caring Clown Course Field Trip
The Caring Clowning Course will take a field trip to put what they have been working on into practice. They will visit an adult care center, put on a little show, and do some roving meet and greet.

Change Bags: Filled With Funny!
Change bags are a staple magic trick for the classic magician, but they are an indispensable item for clowns of every stripe and polka-dot. Fred will introduce you to an array of bags and ideas on how to use them as clowns to get more laughs along with the surprise they can produce. The best part is that you don’t need to be an accomplished magician to use one. Most of the magic is done by the bag; you just need to add the fun and funny.

Well, It Was Funny in Rehearsal
Sure, you can do some magic tricks, skits, or routines, and you can do them as a clown, but are they fun and funny? Maybe it was hilarious in your head and as you rehearsed it, but it fell flat in front of a live audience. What went wrong? Fred will show you how to find the fun and the funny in your routines (and yourself) for any place you need to perform. Learn how to improve your presentation and leave your audiences laughing long after you are gone.

Balloon Decor With a Twist
Want to make more money with balloons? Tie some round balloons together! Learn the best ways to construct easy balloon decorations that you can upsell for events. Since you have some basic twisting skills, you’ll be able to embellish them too! Please bring your own sizing machines, baseplates, and conduit. Just kidding! You’ll learn how to make good-looking decor with basic tools you can get easily.

Beyond a Single Balloon
Have you always wanted to make more elaborate balloon sculptures? It’s easier than you think! Rob will show you how to turn a one-balloon dog into a two-balloon dog, no magic required. Adding a second balloon can take your creations to another level, and with practice, it doesn’t take that much longer. A bag of balloons, a pump, a marker, and a way to break balloons is all you’ll need to bring!

Fun, Gags, and Games with Balloons
This workshop will show you fun ways to entertain with balloons. We’ll discuss clown logic while making balloons. The wilting flower? That can be done with balloons! Learn how to turn the birthday child into the star of the party with a fun balloon hat. Balloons that don’t blow up correctly? What? You’ll learn how to add some pizzazz to your balloon making.

Wearable Wows! Balloon Hats, Bracelets, Wings, and Way More
Also known as: That’s the Best Balloons I’ve Ever Seen! Do you want to learn some impressive, show stopping pieces? This is the class for you! Buckle up! We’re going to use almost every shape and size available, from 160s to 660s. You’ll learn everything from cute bracelets and headbands to large ride-inside sculptures. These are the pieces people talk about and remember.

Character Development: Building Your Clown From the Inside Out
Spend an hour with Karen and explore the essential elements of a clown character and how to apply them to your clowning. This workshop will help you learn some tricks that will help your clown settle into its own character a little sooner and grow in character once it is developed. She will touch on the basics of how your character relates to props, performance, and audience, and vice versa.

Flip Your Lid: How to Use a Clown Hat
Ever end up someplace with nothing to do? Use your hat! There are great tricks and illusions that can be done with a simple felt hat. Karen will show you how to make your hat a clown partner! This class includes lots of student participation and belly laughs!

Make Your Clown Props Work for You
Do you have a great prop that just doesn’t get the reaction you are looking for? Learn from prop whiz Karen Bell how to get the most out of your props. You will learn a clown gag using props and discuss ways to get the most bang for your buck!

Rope Magic for Clowns
It’s time for some ropes for dopes! Sean will teach you 3 rope tricks that you can perform as a clown. One will be amazingly simple, the second will be challenging, and the last one you will have to practice a lot before it becomes natural, but they are all easy once you know how they are done. You will need some rope (preferably a soft, pliable one) and a good pair of scissors on hand for this class.

Super Simple Sound Tech
Sound and tech don’t have to be complicated. In this Tech for Clowns class, we will talk about basic sound equipment, PAs, MP3 players, remotes, and software and apps. Then we will cover why music is important and how to get it, edit it, and make it part of your show.

Yes, YOU Can Make a Solo Show
If you’ve got a couple of magic tricks, some jokes and general foolishness, and maybe a puppet or two, you can wrap those elements up with a unifying theme and create a show. Or approach it from the other angle and start with a concept, then pull from what you have to fill out the show. Join Sean in an exploration of putting your puzzle pieces together to make a show you can be proud to present, solo OR with other clowns.

Beginning and Intermediate Face Painting
This workshop is set up to allow you access to the paints, try them out, and get some hands-on experience. It is a perfect way for you to find out if you like face painting. Annette will introduce you to the products and process and guide you through simple brush techniques to make even the most basic artwork pop.

Intermediate Face Painting
If you have a firm foundation in face painting, it’s time to learn some tips and tricks to add zing to simple designs and take your face painting to the next level! Annette will share her favorite next level brush techniques, shapes, and other tips for more advanced painters.

Make and Take Clown Props and Kazoo Horns (with Greg and Mike)
From parade boards, to walk around props, to kazoo horns, we’ve set aside some time for you to make what you need for the ASCS, or to take home for your clowning. This is hands-on assistance, NOT a workshop. Mike and Greg will be there to guide you as needed, even if you just want to learn how now and make them when you get home.

Parade Props: How to Make and Use Them
There are many types of props that can be used in parades. Explore various types of parade props, the type(s) that might work best for you and your clown character, and new ways to use them for the greatest entertainment value for your audience. Best of all, he’ll show you how you can economically make your own.

How to Make Your Funny a Business
You’ve got a handle on the funny of clowning, but how do you make it work as a business? Understanding business models can be confusing and hard, especially as an independent artist. If you are looking for a guide to developing a business plan, marketing materials, and more, this workshop is for you! It will give you access to a comprehensive business guide for artists that is easy to understand and update.

Vocal Techniques for Clowns
If you are not a silent clown, Rick has some simple techniques and exercises that will help you more effectively use your voice while clowning. Learn warm-ups, breath control, and other methods of keeping your voice in tip top shape for both short and long performances, as well as how to safely stretch your voice into new playful places. We will look at techniques for maintaining vocal health, your singing voice, and more. You will also explore new character creation, emphasis, and expression for greater comic delivery. Oh, and don’t tell anyone, but everything in this workshop will help you even if you ARE a silent clown!

Clown Dance (not a workshop slot)
Try out a few crazy dance steps and then learn a simple dance routine. Will you dance a little solo, do a duo dance with comic interruptions, or can we improvise our dance steps and string them into a group routine? Come and have fun with a dance teacher who doesn’t know which one is her right foot!

Introduction to Caring Clowning
Have you ever wondered just what a Caring Clown is, or does? Join Karen as she introduces you to the ins and outs of Healthcare Clowning. From rules and regulations to hospital humor, she will share her tips on what to do (and a bit of what not to do). You will get an inside look at the challenging yet rewarding field of clowning in hospitals, nursing homes, children’s shelters, and other care facilities. This is also an ideal workshop to prepare you to join next year’s Moose Camp Caring Clown Course.

Mime: The Language of Clowns
As a clown you need to use your whole body to communicate. Mime is the art of using movement to create physical characterizations, express emotion non-verbally, and tell a story without depending on words. For clowns, mime is a vital tool for making physical choices that will take us out of everyday life and into a clownesque world of play.

Beginning Balloons: How to Blow Up, Tie, and Twist Balloons
For beginners only! Learn the basics to get you started on this fun and lucrative hobby. We’ll start with choosing the right balloon and how to inflate it, and provide the hands-on help you need to learn all the twists for simple balloon creations. Christopher will show you his favorite twists and simple designs for newbies. If you have balloons and a pump, bring them.

Character CPR: Bringing Life to Your Character
If you want your character to be ALIVE, you’ve got to give it CPR: Character, Presence, and Relationship. While the breath of the character is important, that alone is little more than life support. It also needs breadth: the width, length, and distance a character covers. Come explore the simple, little things that help determine who or what a character is, what makes it present and real, and how it moves and relates to the audience. You will get tricks and tips on creating the building blocks of character through identity, voice, presence, and believability. Together, these elements will bring a character (and performance) ALIVE! Geared to clowns, puppets, and other characters, this class is more about sharing techniques that bring the essence of life to characters than about character development through backstory or historical characters.

Songs and Silliness for the Musically Challenged
Okay, so you’re not Elvis Parsley or Adull. But that doesn’t mean you can’t sing and play with music as a clown. There are lots of ways you can do it wrong and it comes out the right way for a clown. If, at any point in your life, you have ever sung “Happy Birthday” or “The ABC Song” (which is virtually everyone), you will be able to sing and play with music in your clowning. Come in challenged; leave as a rock star!

Fairs and Festivals Course Field Trip (Tentative)
The Fairs and Festivals Course will take a field trip to put what they have been working on into practice. They will do some roving and meet and greet at a small, local County Fair.

Songs, Sillies, and Stories with Puppets
Puppets are a wonderful addition to clown visits and shows for kids and seniors. In fact, Jane never leaves her puppet pals behind no matter what age she is working with. In this workshop she will share how she incorporates songs, silliness, and stories using puppets when entertaining kids of all ages!

Brittany “Zoe” Allen began her journey in clowning in 2007 as a camper at Moose Camp, as part of her goal to become a clown working with sick children. She returned to camp year after year, adding skills like magic, balloons, puppets, and caring clowning, and eventually started the early morning Wake Up and Wiggles lab. “Zoe” has used the healing power of laughter on several mission trips to India, as a hospital clown at Medical City Children’s Hospital in Dallas for 12 years, and on staff at Camp iHope’s Summer Camp for kids with cancer. When she moved to Florida, she launched a hospital clowning program at Golisano Children’s Hospital, where they were thrilled to see this program helping their patients. With her recent move “back home to Texas,” she is excited to see where her clowning adventures will take her! Brittany has become an integral part of planning and implementing Moose Camp and specializes in “bringing the fun” to camp! Brittany has jumped from being a 101 Instructor to teaching the Caring Clown Course. Her infectious energy and positive attitude are sure to inspire and motivate our campers!

Karen Bell performed as a clown with Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus from 1986 to 1994 and is the only female clown to have had a solo ring gag on RBBB Circus. Karen toured Europe twice with the Department of Defense’s “Festival Follies.” She has appeared on network TV and Disney’s “Let’s Go to the Circus” Sing-a-Long video, is featured in the indie film “Children of All Ages,” and in PBS’s “Jack Perkins’ Gulf Coast Journal.” Karen has taught at COAI conventions and wrote several articles for their Calliope Magazine. In 2008 she was the headliner for the WCA National Conference. Karen moved to Sarasota, FL to work with The Circus Arts Conservatory in 2005, helping to develop and implement the Humor Therapy program known as Laughter Unlimited. She is currently the Outreach Education Manager, teaching core curriculum using the circus as the theme. Karen is also the clown coach for Sailor Circus Academy in Sarasota. We are very excited to welcome her back to the staff of Moose Camp!

Fred Baisch is an award winning clown as well as an accomplished magician. We are thrilled that Fred takes time from his busy schedule to be with us at Moose Camp. Fred is a big part of our Dealer Room. He brings a huge magic shop to Moose Camp along with everything you need in magic, balloons, puppets, and more. Then he breaks out all of his personal favorites and trade secrets and hauls them up to the classroom to share in his course. Fred has been a perfect addition to Moose Camp. He fits in perfectly with his giving teaching style, his real love of being a clown himself, and his chance to mess around and laugh with all of us instead of being trapped in his huge magic shop!

Sean Carlock has been entertaining since age six. Theater, magic, and clowning have always been his passion. The only thing he loves more than clowning is sharing it with others. Sean grew so much in his clown career since first attending Moose Camp that we were proud to add him to our camp staff. He draws from his magic and theater background, as well as his time as a Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus clown, to bring you his spin on the world of clowning.

Annette Darragh has been a professional clown and clowning instructor for over 30 years. She has won numerous awards for clowning in Make-up, Character, Skit, Face Painting, and Balloon competitions at the Regional, National, and World levels. She specializes in hospital clowning and its therapeutic benefits and has been recognized in many cancer publications for her work in the healing power of humor. Annette owns and operates “Funny Bone Props,” a business that sells hospital props for Caring Clowns. She was selected for the People to People ambassador program, and in 1999 was one of seven clowns from the U.S. sent on the first clowning delegation to China. In 2000, Annette was inducted into the Midwest Clown Hall of Fame. In 2013 she received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Midwest Clown Round-Up. Annette lectures throughout the year at conventions and seminars around the country.

Mike Fixer dabbled in clowning for fun in the late 1960s and early 1970s. During this time, he first learned of Ringling Brothers Clown College and had hopes of attending the school after high school. As the realities of high school and then college set in, Mike set his dreams of Clown College aside, but resumed clowning as a hobby in 1980 while at Western New England University, where he earned a BSBA in Business Management. Throughout the 80s, Mike continued to hone his clowning skills by meeting and learning from other local clowns, joining a COAI alley, attending various clown conventions, and performing at parties, corporate events, parades, and various clown shows. Several times in the late 80s, he was a guest clown on Roberts Brothers Circus before pursuing his dream of attending RBBB Clown College. In 1990, Mike was accepted into and graduated from Clown College and went on to become part of the Clyde Beatty Cole Brothers Circus Clown Alley in 1993. He served on the Board of Directors for Clowns of America International, Inc. and was a regular clowning and props columnist for LaughMakers, a family entertainers and variety arts magazine. Mike enjoys sharing what he has learned about clowning, particularly in the area of props.

Rick Hoops is a multi-disciplinary artist living in Saint Paul, MN. Rick holds Bachelor’s degrees in opera and theater, as well as a Master’s degree in Arts and Cultural Leadership. They work at the University of Minnesota in operations and events and are an educator and performer at Minnesota Opera, where they’ve even been hosting monthly library shows in clown! In addition to more formal work, Rick has had their own voice lesson studio for over 8 years and recently started a consulting business for creative enterprises.

Karen “Dot” Hoyer’s mission in life is to bring laughter and a sense of humor to every situation she encounters. For the past 20 years, she’s visited nursing homes and senior centers with Vaudeville Chicago, appearing as a variety of eccentric and clownesque characters. She cultivates her skills in mime, mask, music, dance, and puppetry, performing all over Chicago and the Midwest. Karen has taught hundreds of workshops at the elementary, high school, and college level, including at Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Clown College! Every week she appears as Dr. Dot, the Chief Bonehead of La Rabida Hospital under the auspices of Healthy Humor, after over 17 years with the Big Apple Circus Clown Care Unit. Karen first came to Moose Camp as a “Special Guest Star” in 2011 and feels truly blessed to be a part of the returning faculty.

Christopher Hudert has been in entertainment for over 50 years, most of that as a profession. He is equally at home on stage as a performer; backstage as a builder, writer, or tech; in front of the stage as a director; or off stage as an instructor, talent coach, trainer, or goofball. Christopher attended Ringling’s famed Clown College (Class of ’82, with Tricia) and traveled with the Circus for 9 years. He is the only person to serve as Boss Clown on all 3 units: first subbing on the Blue Unit, then as Boss Clown in Japan on the Gold Unit, and finally as Boss Clown on the Red Unit. After traveling with the Circus, Christopher cofounded Applause Unlimited, an entertainment company specializing in professional puppet shows, stilt walking, and clowning. He was the Stilt Trainer, Halloween Haunt Talent Coordinator, and Production Manager for Kings Dominion’s (a Cedar Fair Park) Live Entertainment department for over 12 years. Christopher has been a featured instructor at Ringling’s Clown College, Advanced Studies in Clowning, RVA Circus and Puppet Arts Camp, the Mooseburger Joyful Journey, numerous Puppetry Festivals and Clown Conventions across the country, and most importantly, here at Mooseburger Clown Arts Camp, where he teaches workshops on many aspects of both clown and puppet arts. He is also very active behind the scenes, making Moose Camp and e-Alley happen, and is a regular contributing writer for the Jest For Clowns e-magazine.

Linda Hulet began her clowning career in 1987 as “Shylo.” She later created “PJ” and “Gladys Pumpernickle.” She has competed and won in Character and Whiteface Make-up/Costume, Single Skit, Master Clown, and Group Skit (with Victor “Sporty” Hulet). Linda now performs as “Flo the Clown” at fairs and festivals, winning awards such as Best Strolling Entertainer. She was on staff at The Big Fresno Fair as Entertainment Director and Commercial Exhibits Director and created the Kid’s Agventure Land area. Linda has taught various clown subjects at clown conventions and conferences, including on a clown cruise. You may have seen her in Chuck Oberstein’s paintings and figurines and Ron Lee figurines.

Jane Kinney attended Mooseburger Clown Camp for the first time in 2009. She arrived as Mrs. Kinney, first grade teacher, and departed as Ladybug the Clown, first grade teacher! Upon returning home she began weekly visits to senior care facilities to offer a moment of joy, delight, tenderness, and comfort to residents, their families, and staff through humor, loving kindness, and a playful presence. She also began the Silly Nilly Clown Club in her school for 4th and 5th graders to learn the art of clowning. They entertained in senior care facilities and their school. Ladybug attended Moose Camp summer after summer, and upon her retirement from teaching, she added Caring Clown visits at UW Children’s Hospital in Madison and holiday shows at senior and memory care centers. Still having the teaching bug in her, Ladybug began performing shows on Fire Safety, Kindness, and Read Across America in schools to bring smiles and laughter to children of all ages. Her entertaining programs encourage and educate using humor, music, puppets, whimsical magic, and storytelling. When Pricilla introduced Red Nose Readers in 2019, Jane joyously jumped on board and continues to share the wonderful world of clowning, literacy, and kindness with kids everywhere. Jane is the Director of Red Nose Readers.

Tricia Manuel is the unmistakable Pricilla Mooseburger and the lovable, zany Miss Moose. She got her start in clowning in the 1980s with Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus and Disneyland. She went on to create the costume company Pricilla Mooseburger Originals. After coming back from the circus, she found that the world needed a fresh take on how to train clowns: a clown school where they could go for a week and move toward new levels of humor and joy. She wanted to create a place where a beginner would get a holistic start on clowning with all its parts, not just a nice makeup. With the world-class Ringling Clown College program defunct, she began a plan for Mooseburger Clown Arts Education in 1994. It was the first clown training program to teach every style of clowning based on choosing one specific area on which to focus. Mooseburger Clown Camp as we currently hold it began in 1996 and keeps getting better every year! Tricia loves teaching Clown Arts and considers it a vocation, not simply a profession. There is nothing more exciting than watching students and customers discover new things in themselves! While she loves going out to clown, she knows that she touches more people through the clowns she teaches than she could by clowning on her own. Tricia gives 100% of herself to her students, and they in turn share the love of laughter with the world. She is the heart and soul of Moose Camp.

Rex Nolen was a teenager selling cotton candy at Kansas City’s Municipal Auditorium when he first saw Otto Griebling perform and got hooked on clowning. Later, under the tutelage of Master Clown Frosty Little, Rex learned the finer points of physical comedy, timing, delivery, classic gags, and pyrotechnics. Rex was the hobo model for Mehron Make-Up and has won numerous awards for make-up, skits, and parade-ability. He’s also a past educational director for COAI. He loves passing along what he’s learned over the course of more than 25 years of roughly 250 gigs a year, including birthday parties, festivals, grand openings, and special events. Rex was a favorite member of the Mooseburger Camp staff for many years, and we are happy to have him back with us!

Greg Seckora is a Camper turned Staff member who first started clowning after attending Moose Camp in 2013. Now leading the Boys of Summer, he can be found working behind the scenes helping with various tasks that make Moose Camp happen, as well as teaching our beginner balloon classes at camp. The rest of the year, Greg is a member of The Clown Arounds based in Maple Lake, MN. Through The Clown Arounds, Greg does balloon twisting and has participated in various events, including parades and shows at local nursing homes.

Ron Severini, Executive Producer of Castle Entertainment, Inc., has over 50 years of experience in the entertainment industry, arranging extraordinary talent for some of the world’s most varied and unique events. He is a former Dean of RBBB Clown College and spent over 20 years with Feld Entertainment (Circus, Clown College, Siegfried & Roy, Disney on Ice), as well as serving as the Talent Casting Director of Walt Disney World. Ron has traveled the US and around the globe scouting out the best talent in the world. Ron is also the author of several books on clowns and circus.

Mark “Smokie” Simmonds discovered clowning after seeing the impact a five-minute clown routine had on a friend’s daughter who was in the hospital. That experience inspired him to begin his own clown journey, which eventually brought him to Mooseburger Clown Arts Camp. Since then, Smokie has become an active performer and educator, working to create opportunities for clowns to learn, connect, perform, and grow together. He believes some of the best things in clowning happen when we share what we know, invite others along, and have fun doing it.

Julia Swanson has been clowning her whole life. Her mother, Pricilla Mooseburger, raised her to appreciate the art of clowning, and she has now completely embraced it! She started with theatre in school, but it just didn’t seem to be enough for Julia. One summer, she had the opportunity to work on Culpepper Merriweather with her brother, DJ Weiss, for a few weeks. The first time she ran into the circus ring, she knew she was hooked. After that she had the pleasure of working in Brooklyn on the Holiday Circus when she was 17, and before she knew it she had graduated high school and was on a plane to Dallas, Texas to audition for the Greatest Show on Earth! She toured with Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey and loved every minute of it! She is also beyond excited to be reunited with her Moose Camp family, both old and new, and can’t wait to get this week started.
