What are your ‘must have’ clown props or tricks when you go out the door to spread joy and happiness?
For me, of course, I must have at least one rubber chicken. I love playing my chick-a-le-le of course. But I often have a mini rubber chicken in my pocket. Why? Because it’s fun to have an inexpensive one to give away if I come across a very special friend!
Another thing I like to have in my pocket is a foam clown nose. I think these are great for when you bring anyone on stage. I like to tell them I need an assistant and they “need to look the part.” Child or adult it always gets a great laugh. What a great way to spread the joy of clowning around! It is also the perfect time to give them a Real Clown card.
If I were a magician type I might even do a little sponge ball magic with the nose first! Hm, something for me to work on, to be sure.
Okay, now that they are an official clown with a red nose, they need to know what it is all about. I know I have talked about the Real Clown cards before. But it does bear repeating.
When clowns go out to perform we also need to educate.
Back when I started clowning, pretty much everyone loved us or they just kept their mouths shut. We all know times have changed. But it is not impossible to change folks minds and turn the tide again! Whenever I give out one of the Real Clown cards I always get a positive response. Folks often say “Hey yeah, you’re right!”
Alright. So I have: a rubber chicken, some mini pocket chickens, Real Clown cards, a couple red foam noses. Now I am good to go, right?
Wrong. I need my own business cards. Yes, business cards for clowns. Even if you are just a volunteer (don’t make my roll my eyes at you — you are never just an anything!) you should have a business card.
My clown club has a card so everyone can have a stack of these to give out. You should have a clown card so folks can know how to get a hold of you.
Vistaprint.com has deals all the time on them. But if you happen to miss a sale, you can always use this coupon code for 20% discount off: THANKS20
What should be on a clown card?
- Name (choose either clown club, your clown name, or your company).
- Social media acct where they can follow you (Facebook, Instagram, etc.).
- Your real name! With the world worried about creepy clowns it is smart to have a real name on the card along with your clown name! “To book Dipsey Doodle the Clown call Jane Doe at 123-456-7890″ Normal people might feel uncomfortable asking for Dipsey Doodle! You look more professional.
- Phone number with area code.
- Address (use a PO Box if you don’t want them to know your residence).
Be careful about putting too much on your card. I like to keep the back blank in case I want to write something for them. But if you feel the need to list what you do, list no more than three things, and be sure to bullet-point them.
Think about adding an image, either your company logo or a photo of you in clown. If you get your picture on the card, go for a head and shoulders shot instead of a full body shot. Your whole costume image is just too small with a full body shot. Make sure your face shows. Before you get it printed, show a mock up to a friend to see if it all makes sense and looks good. It’s even better if they are not a clown!
You are clowning’s best billboard
Being ready to promote ourselves is not a bad thing! In this day and age it is a good thing. Let the world know that you are a agent of happiness, ready to spread joy where ever it is most needed. If you watch the news, you know we have a lot of work to do, so get busy clownie!!!
