Sometimes all we need is a good laugh shared among friends.
No Clown Can Clown Alone.
Pretty impressive statement, eh?
Well, it’s the truth.
I am sure you know the feeling: so much planning, work, and anticipation for a big event.
Then in — a blink of an eye — it is over!
I kind of feel like I am standing in Times Square on New Year’s after the ball has dropped and everyone has gone home.
And I’m all alone now.
Last month I was honored with the 2016 “Lifetime of Laughter” award by The International Clown Hall of Fame for the 20 years of clown arts education we provided at Mooseburger Clown Camp. It was a very humbling experience.
When I was asked to say a few words, honestly I could only think of all the clowns I have met at Moose Camp, conventions, and on the circus. I thought about how you can’t clown or teach in a vacuum, and what would I do without all these wonderful people in my life. I thought about how this award wasn’t earned by me all on my lonesome.
…I also thought “Hey! I’m not that old yet!”
We Need Each Other
No clown can clown alone.
We are a part of something so much bigger than ourselves. We need our audience and their response. To thrive as performers we need each other.
In our global economy it is easy to buy all of our clown supplies online, watch educational YouTube clips, and participate in online forums and blogs.
But nothing replaces personal interaction with our peers.
When I read the camper evaluations at the end of Mooseburger Camp, there is a re-occurring theme. Clowns need the interaction with other clowns. Staff and students alike mention how it feeds their comic soul to be with like-minded people.
It’s our tribe!
When you get in a clown slump, try to keep this in mind. It really doesn’t matter how long you have been clowning; you’ll get the “blues” every once in a while.
Don’t despair; instead, find a fellow clown.
If you can share some laughter time with other clowns it will help recharge your batteries.
For new clowns it is supportive. It reaffirms there are more people like us and that we made the right decision to start clowning!
For veteran performers it is enriching to be with others who share our passion for laughter for a weary world.
So often these days we run from event to event without taking the time to enjoy the laughter we share. Try to cherish those moments.
My wish for you this summer is that you have wonderful events to perform in and clowns friends to share your joy of clowning.
Circus Report – August 2016
It was a real treat to have my daughter Julia with me at Mooseburger Camp. I’m so glad Ringling let her off the circus for the week!
She left a teenager of 18 and came home an adult of 21.
This year she became full-fledged staff member with her own workshops and helping me to teach Clowning 101.
We performed together and what a treat it was!!
She has her own sense of style and confidence now. I couldn’t be happier for her.
Julia is back on the road again. But Mooseburger Clown Camp 2016 will be special not only for our 20 year celebration, but also for Julia coming home.
See her now in Texas before she finishes her final tour with the Greatest Show on Earth…sometime at the end of this year!

As you probably remember reading in last month’s newsletter, my son DJ was hired by Royal Caribbean Cruise Line to entertain on the “Harmony of the Seas”.
He is currently floating somewhere off the coast of Spain, happy as a clam.
Thank you for always being interested in my kiddos. I’m so proud of them! Please continue to pray for their safety in their crazy travels.
