“That’s not how I’d do that.”
How many times have you heard that not only in life but in clowning?
Recently Matty Spraggins posted a cool video online. It was an example of a magician doing a simple magic trick, and then a clown doing the same trick. It is a “cut and restored” trick using balloons. There were a flurry of comments from clowns telling him how it could be improved.
Lots of great ideas, but most of us missed the point.
What he had put out was an outline of a basic trick. It was up to each of us to figure out ways to make this simple trick our own.
I encourage you to watch his video below. Go ahead … I’ll wait!
(I got his permission to post this video)
What did you think of the clown magic?
Here are my thoughts:
If my character Miss Moose would be trying to do that trick she would struggle with blowing up the balloon. Why? Because I have always had trouble with that! I even pulled a muscle in my cheek once trying to blow up a 360 animal balloon! OUCH! That is my truth. I can’t blow up balloons. As a clown I would want to find a way to make it easier. Cutting off the end of the balloon makes perfect sense, to a clown like me! That is what I like to call Clown Logic.
What would a clown think? How would a clown solve that problem? Think about it. Play with idea.
Most importantly: How would YOUR CLOWN finish the magic trick?
Tell me what what you would do in the comments below or make a simple video of yourself and post it on our Facebook page.
You don’t necessarily need to be in full costume and make-up. Maybe just put on your nose or wig. When I was a clown on the circus we always practiced in our clown shoes and wigs. Mostly because the routines we did were very physical and we needed to be sure we could do them in our shoes and to be sure our wigs wouldn’t fly off! But it also helped us be in character.
I know if I put on my nose or shoes … everything changes. Just like magic. Clown Magic!
I look forward to seeing what solutions you come up with.
