Life this year has been kind of crazy for my Ringling kiddos on the tanbark trail (that’s “circus talk” for the route)!
Here is 2016 in a nutshell:
My son DJ Weiss ended his circus career this spring with the Blue Unit Clown Alley of Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. Not one to be out of work for long, DJ came home for less than a week and took off for Europe to work on Royal Caribbean’s Harmony of the Seas, the world’s largest cruise ship.
We had fun at Pricilla Mooseburger Originals helping him put together some cruise worthy costumes. He entertained patrons with his silly sailor and tacky tourist. It was a 6 month contract. He learned how much work is was to outfit a brand new ship, and work on such a big boat! He also got to see Europe. I must say I was pretty jealous of those pictures of him sipping sangria in Barcelona!
But the land and the circus called! DJ is now back on the circus, this time with Ringling’s Red Unit.
Julia Bothun, on the other hand, has decided that three years on the road is enough.
Sawdust in Their Veins
Amazingly, DJ’s start on the Red Unit will overlap with Julia’s final train run.
This week they are performing in Huntsville, Alabama.
I know it will be bitter-sweet for them.
At the beginning of DJ’s circus career with Culpepper Merriweather he was able to bring Julia on board for a couple of weeks. They performed together and Julia officially got bit by the circus bug. I knew I had lost her to the circus when she cried all the way home.
My Kiddos Are The Best
For a brief time this month, both DJ and Julia were home here in Minnesota on the same weekend, which also happened to be the time of Maple Lake’s Christmas celebration! So they gave up a day of their vacation and dressed up as Santa’s Helpers to help out at the event.
When people ask me what my children are up to, I just have to laugh.
It is and probably will always be the same answer: an adventure!
