(leave your makeup home, but take your skills) Do you want to work more? Perhaps we need to give the public more options. I�m not just talking about adding juggling, unicycling, or origami to the skills we already have. What about a halfway character, a character in between a regular person and a clown? A comical entertainer, an entertaining performer, basically a clown without the makeup. Having a character like this opens many a new door. Some businesses want entertainment but they may be concerned about customers or staff being afraid of clowns even if they themselves are not. Some people have had a bad experience with a well meaning but very amateur clown which has left them with reservations about our craft in general. For some it is cool to be afraid of clowns, but people still love to watch the antics of �undercover clowns� -- look at Robin Williams or Jim Carey. There is an element of risk to performing �sans face.� We no longer can hide behind our secret identity. People see us, the real us. At first it seems like a risk but it is another step towards freeing the child inside of us. I still wear my Fitzwilly nametag when I am a comical entertainer. Many people still refer to me as �the clown.� That is exactly the response I want from the public. Fitzwilly is the clown they need at their next event whether he is in makeup or not. This past year I did a number of gigs as a �comical entertainer� or �festive artist.� This saved the time of putting on the makeup, but I still wore my clown shirt and vest with my black slacks and comfortable shoes. My intention was to stand out in people�s minds. When Jane Q. Public saw a group of people crowded together I wanted her to be able to identify me even from a distance as being the entertainer. I did not want to be confused with the wait-staff at any of the restaurants I was working either. I just recently came across a comment by Tom Sikorski as quoted in The Funny Paper that I think really brings this point home. �Audiences expect a performer to create an exceptional experience� I think that if you don�t look out of place off stage � you don�t look special enough.� This is not the usual thinking. Many times the public has the choice between a clown who hopefully knows what is going on, or a high school kid in ripped jeans and a baggy t-shirt who can twist a couple of flowers and swords, bought a face painting kit at Wally-world, or learned a couple basic magic tricks. Clowns are not just for little Julia�s birthday party. Clowning is for everyone. The �secret,� if you can call it that, is to adjust to the market. There are plenty of articles about adjusting your look and your show for different age groups. Ideas such as wearing less makeup and a simpler costume for younger age groups are commonplace. Well, why not use this kind of thinking when considering the different needs of the public at large? We want to make it as easy as possible for people to hire us for their entertainment needs. We also want to retain that hard-earned image of professionalism we have strived for. A couple of things to consider when working out of face: � Use your clowning skills � Be entertaining, fun, and energetic � Dress for success � Dress professionally but make it say �I�m the entertainment!� <hr width="60%" size="3" color="#000000"> What�s Happening in Mooseland� <div align="center"><img src="http://mooseburger.com/newsletter/nursing-home-visit.jpg" alt="" width="490" height="235" border="0"></div> I took a new �look� to our local care center with our clown club, The Clown Arounds. We were scheduled to do a show recently. I had a different costume that I have used for parades, but I wanted to try something different. I put together a new Auguste character. Now before you fans of my Pricilla Mooseburger character go nuts -- I am not ditching Pricilla Mooseburger the Whiteface! In fact, I am getting a NEW dress made for her as we speak. However, for last week�s event, I needed something light and fun; a casual outfit I could use for our nursing home shows, parades, and such. I still call myself Pricilla Mooseburger when I�m in this new look (after 23 years it�s kind of hard to break that habit). I was a little nervous at first, but by the time I got the whole thing together and headed out the door, I felt great! I think I�ll write a newsletter about it�..stay tuned! <div align="center"><img src="http://mooseburger.com/newsletter/julia-snowman.jpg" alt="" width="350" height="287" border="0"></div> Cherry Mooseburger turned 15 on Jan. 13th. How you take the make-up off is just as important as how you put it on! When I was on the circus we used Johnson and Johnson baby shampoo, or olive oil. Since most clown make-up is some kind of petroleum-based product (grease) you need something to cut the grease. Shampoo is geared to cut grease. Oil re-liquefies the grease on your face so you can wash it off more easily. <div align="center"><img src="http://mooseburger.com/newsletter/makeup-remover.jpg" alt="" width="150" height="151" border="0"></div> Now that I have 40-something year old skin, I prefer a make-up remover! It means less rubbing and scrubbing. I love Mehron�s solid make-up remover. <a href="http://mooseburger.com/onlinestore/index.cgi?code=3&page=1&cat=2">You can purchase it by clicking here.</a> There are other liquid removers that work great, but I don�t want that stuff leaking in my luggage! Plus, the airports are still limiting the amount of liquids allowed in your luggage, so a solid remover is a safe bet. Another great product is Huggies Baby Wash cloths � they save your bathroom towels from that first messy, gooey wiping of all the re-liquefied paint. Be sure to moisturize after you are done with your clean up! Dry skin sucks in the pigments of your make-up and is harder to remove, so moisturize before you begin, too. <hr width="90%" size="3" color="#000000"> <A NAME="feed"></a> Mooseburger Clown Arts Camp News! (Actually as I write this newsletter it is in the middle of December. I will sneak in a Merry Christmas and happy holiday to you all!) A new year always brings to mind a fresh start. Lists get made, resolutions proclaimed, good attentions abound! But how do you really make a change in your life � or, more to the point in this newsletter -- your clown life? It is hard. If you just had to worry about yourself, it would be easier. Most of us have jobs and a family that needs us as well. That aside, you could resolve to practice more, buy only things you will learn to use, go to all the clown meetings, write a new show�.I could go on and on. For each good intention, there is an equally good excuse for why you can�t make it happen. And don�t ask me why I know this!!!!!! I am quite intimate with the subject. I think the thing that stops us the most is fear. Fear of failure. It is kind of funny when you think of it! Most people have nightmares about being in front of a group of people and being laughed at! Our biggest fear is that we will be in front of a group of people and there will be a stone cold silence! To get past the fear, you can hit it head on. Some of the things that help you get over performance anxiety is to practice, practice, practice. Don�t be afraid to ask for help from a friend or someone from your clown club. Most folks will be flattered. If you go to a convention, do NOT be afraid to walk up to any of the instructors or vendors and ask them questions. Be curious! That is what we are there for. It always makes me sad when folks tell me they had questions they wanted to ask, but just didn�t want to bother me. Go ahead and bother me. Helping people is my vocation! So, what can you do to get over the fear of failure? Ask some friends to help you work on a new routine. Find some kids in your neighborhood, or family to be a test audience. Whenever my friend Fred and I work on a new routine, the neighborhood kids come running. They set up the lawn chairs and watch the rehearsal. It is easy for us to know what works and what doesn�t�we ask them! Better yet, their laughter tells us. Sometimes we ask them questions as well. Ask a child what they think and be ready for an honest answer. Kids are in learning modes as they spend most of their time at school. They jump at a chance to help an adult learn something. Letting them know in advance that it is a rehearsal instead of a show takes the pressure off as well. Be sure to ask lots of questions. Ask them why it was funny, why they liked the routine or didn�t like it. What would they do if they were in your big funny shoes? Be ready for some great answers. Have your clown notebook handy to write down any new ideas. Kids do say the funniest things. They may give you new ideas for a different routine. Be sure to thank them for their help. Your local clown club can also be a great resource. For our Christmas party we brought snacks and then practiced as many skits as we could. Every body took a turn at different parts. I believe the group learned a lot from watching different clowns perform different parts. We wrote a new routine as well. Some of us had gone to the Midwest convention in Lansing, MI. We saw some skits we liked, and put our own twist on them to fit our group. We will be performing them in the local nursing home in a few weeks. Clowning with a group can take the fear out of performing. How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. That is also how you get out of the rut of not doing anything new with your clowning. Be realistic on what you can and cannot do. Write your goals down. Make that �Clown Wish List.� Write those goals on a calendar. More specifically, list your goals for the year. Start a new piece of paper and list one goal in bold. Underneath write what it will take for you to accomplish this goal. Like this� Example #1: You want to go to Moose Camp and get more education. Make it a priority, not a dream. What will it take to make this possible? Time and money. First: the money part. To achieve this goal it might take a year or two. That�s ok. Moose Camp will always be here � we�re not going anywhere. We all know how fast time flies. So start your own clown savings account. Resolve to put a little bit in your account when ever you get paid to clown. If you are a volunteer clown, you can let friends and family know they can contribute to your clown education fund instead of buying you gifts you don�t really want or need. Did you know we have Moose Camp gift certificates? Did you also know that we have an easy monthly payment plan? It really works � many campers tell us that they couldn�t have afforded Moose Camp if it wasn�t for our payment plan. If you have a clown or entertainment business, the week you spend at Moose Camp will pay for itself over and over. If you pick up just one tip that helps you book more parties, or adds to the kinds of events you can book, you can't afford not to take a week off. What you learn here will bring more profit to your business, and you will more than make up the lost income. There is also the question "What does it cost you NOT to come to Moose Camp?" Will you miss clown jobs or new business opportunities if you don't come? So I guess you could ask yourself, "Is it too expensive to stay home...?" Second: the time part. Time at Moose Camp means time away from family. This is something that will need to be discussed with your loved ones. They may not be too keen on the idea of you using up vacation time to be away from them. Once you discuss the idea and let them know in advance what your dream/goal is they will understand better. Moose Camp Alumni talk about how supportive their families have become on their journey to Mooseland! Why? They know how happy and recharged they become at camp. They know they are better clowns, happier folks, and it is good for everyone in the family. You may also need to get time off from work. Putting in for the time off is part of the plan too. All we will say is that the time will pass whatever you do. If you give us a week, just one week of your life, we promise, it will not be wasted. We will treasure that time with you and fill it to the best of our ability. That one week will change you. Could be a small change, or a big one, but it will be a powerful time. The week at Moose Camp very often becomes for people "the time of their life!" Example #2: You want to learn a new skill. This will take education and rehearsal. Get as much information as you can about the skill. Talk to people who have this skill. Plan to rehearse the skill. Give your self a timeline. Write rehearsal time on your calendar. Try one month at a time. If you find out after a month that you were not able to stick to your plan, revise it. Don�t just give up! Maybe your plan and the world�s plan didn�t work together quite right. Just revise your plan and try again. It takes commitment. But you can do it. Team up with a friend who you can share your plan with. They don�t have to be a clown. Ask them to check in with you on your progress. Sometimes that is all it takes to keep on track. Moose Camp is a happy memory! We had a wonderful time, fabulous campers, great weather and lots of fun. I am so appreciative of my entire staff and the people that come to camp. It is a new learning experience each year. You can�t get that many clowns together in one spot for a week and NOT learn something! I learned there are new ways to teach old subjects as I revamped my �Comic Movement� class. I learned to let go and gave my 3 movement workshops to special guest star Robin Eurich and found I had more energy to devote to my other workshops and course. I learned that putting the time into planning is ALWAYS worth more than doing things on the fly. There is a place for spontaneity and being able to make changes but that kind of flexibility is easier to achieve when you have a solid footing of a well thought-out plan.   I really think that goes for most things. I know performers who hate to rehearse because they feel it will limit their spontaneity. I believe the opposite to be true. I have found that when you really are well rehearsed you have the ability to step out of your regular routine when a fun opportunity presents itself. Then you can improv a bit, and go back to the tried and true material and keep your show on track. A little rehearsal can go a long way as long as you focus, take notes, and make it fun. I know my best performances come when I plan a bit of run-through time in advance. Why? Because I am more relaxed knowing everything is in order -- that means props, costume pieces, lighting and music. If something is amiss you have time to fix it. Even the most tried and true, well-rehearsed gag can benefit from a brush-up rehearsal. I had Robin Eurich help me with a spot in my signature �Bunny Magic� gag. It was a simple fix, but hey, I have been doing this gag for over 20 years! It took new eyes to help me find the sequence that made sense and a couple of timely quips to tie it all together. Sometimes I have to remind myself that just because I have seen it before it doesn�t mean my audience has. And even if they have, maybe they want to see it again in a different context! The long glove is an old bit. But it is funny when you have two of them on a big stage! <div align="center"><img src="http://mooseburger.com/newsletter/long-glove.jpg" alt="" width="550" height="262" border="0"></div> Keep it up tempo Have you been using the same music for 20-30 years? Ok maybe only three years! Think about trying something new. I learned at Moose Camp that clowns move to the beat of the music. If we put a slower piece of music behind a gag the clowns move slower! Not what you want depending on the context of the show. I needed to put 98 clowns in a show that ideally would last an hour. Slow music, even if it was fun and fit the gag slowed down the show. Not good. Now if we had 10 clowns doing a 45 min show we could use that type of music to establish a theme or reinforce a character. But not in a show that had that many clowns who needed their moment in the spotlight. New music can give an old routine new life! <div align="center"><img src="http://mooseburger.com/newsletter/win-big.jpg" alt="" width="550" height="257" border="0"></div> <div align="center"><img src="http://mooseburger.com/newsletter/show.jpg" alt="" width="550" height="250" border="0"></div> Say yes! I am a creature of habit. I like things to run smoothly and that sometimes means you get in a rut. As much as I like to keep things the same I need to make changes to Moose Camp. What I have found is that making small changes keeps things fresh. This year we said good bye to our Hobo Dinner. Next year we will be replacing it with the Moose Camp Family Picnic. Staff will be coming dressed as our favorite relative! We will do outdoor games and have picnic food. <div align="center"><table align="center" cellspacing="2" cellpadding="2" border="0"> <tr> <td><img src="http://mooseburger.com/newsletter/tooth-fairy.jpg" alt="" width="263" height="300" border="0"></td> <td>Rex is already having trouble deciding which one of his favorite relatives he will come as! I won�t give it away, but after his appearance as the Tooth Fairy -- anything goes!   </td> </tr> </table> </div> Know your limits I learned that even if the gag is funny sometimes you need to use common sense and thing about the long haul! Literally! After stuffing 13 clowns in my new Morris Mini Minor the chassis was sitting on top of the wheels! I had to ask the coaches to take out two of the clowns so the car would not be damaged and could actually move! I love that little car and want to be sure I can use it for many years to come. Are you doing anything that might be a detriment to your health just because it is funny? Trust me, your body has a fabulous memory. While it might not bother you now, down the road it will come back to haunt you. Ask ANY Ringling clown. They will tell you their story.   <div align="center"><img src="http://mooseburger.com/newsletter/clown-car.jpg" alt="" width="550" height="250" border="0"></div> Go into new things with a positive attitude Mark Renfro retired from Moose Camp last year. He warned me in advance that he would be moving on. There was no drama, or hard feelings. Mark needed to do some other things and I totally respect him for it and we will always be friends. But that left a huge hole in the Clowning 101 Course. Brenda Marshall stepped in and we had a ball. Was it different? Yes. Do I miss Mark? Absolutely. Was it still good? Yes indeed! Working with someone new is always exciting and challenging. I was able to use what Mark had taught me and put it together what Brenda had to bring to the table. It worked and I sincerely look forward to next year. Those of you who have to move on and work with a new partner may face this challenge. My best advice is to dive in and say yes to the possibilities. Do not hang onto the past and let it get in between the new things you can learn from working with someone new.   Always take the time to say thank you Say it to your audience and to the people around you. I can�t thank my staff enough. I can�t thank my campers enough. I can�t thank my family enough for supporting me with ideas, a shoulder to lean on, and the collective resources of an amazing group of talented people. Post-Season: If this is the end of your big parade season, be sure to launder all the parts of your costume you used this summer. Put dryer sheets in shoes and pockets to keep them fresh. Fix any needed repairs NOW before those little rips become big ones. Make a list of what you want to make or buy for next season and tape it up in a place you are apt to see often! Or, as my friend Guido says, you�ll �Forgettabout it!�    Pre-Season:    As summer comes to a screeching halt this week, it is time to think about the upcoming holiday season. No, REALLY!  I�m not joking! NOW is the time to think ahead to ensure you will have a fun and successful holiday season! If you want to get bookings for November and December, you better start working on it in September.     Here are some ideas for events and promotion between September and January: <ul type="DISC"> <li>Put together your ads for local papers for holiday party entertainment. Call the paper now and get the job done ahead of time.  Ask about a price break for placing the same ad for 3 or 4 consecutive weeks.  Feature a photo of your character in a goofy Elf or Wizard Hat in the ad.</li> <li>Consider booking yourself as a face painter for local community parties for Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, etc.  Parents like to have a safe alternative for their kids to enjoy, so contact the school�s PTA and Chamber of Commerce to see who is sponsoring the events.  Display your business cards on the table for the parents and offer a coupon for 10% off if they book you within a month.</li> <li>See if your local costume shop offers face painting or "make-up" services to go with costumes. You may be able to cultivate a great new business partnership with a local business. I am a marginal face painter, but my costume shop customers absolutely love to have their make-up done to match their rental costumes.</li> <li>Come up with a Halloween costume for your clown Character. The kids think it is hilarious! I have a cute witch-e-poo costume to wear as Pricilla.  Wear an elf hat, Santa, witch or wizard hat just for the fun of it. Of course, you could wear Easter bunny ears if you are the confused type! Kids will love correcting you!</li> <li>Update your show to reflect the holidays. One holiday-themed trick can be a fun addition without a big expense. For example, patter for the rope trick �Professor�s Nightmare� can be adapted to any event or message � I�ve heard dozens of different approaches for that same trick!  Add a holiday story or joke to your show. Start looking for joke books at your local library. Find used books online at <a href="http://www.amazon.com" target="_blank">www.amazon.com</a>. </li> <li>See if you can get booked at a church Fall Festival or local library for story time reading and performing in character. You never know if they have grant money to use up by the end of the year.  If an event has no budget to hire you, you could ask the Chamber of Commerce to pair you up with a local business to be your sponsor and reduce your rate � now the event can afford you and you�ve just opened up a possible new business partnership. And even if it is a non-paying gig, it is still a great way to get your face and name out there and build a report with your community.  Don�t forget to distribute flyers and business cards!</li> <li>Dress like a friendly witch or scarecrow to do some story telling at a local apple orchard or pumpkin patch.  Or what about an elf leading Christmas carols at a fir tree farm or ice skating rink?</li> <li>Send out postcards to past customers reminding them to book you before your schedule is full. You can print them on your computer (save the template for future uses). If you save your customers in a database like Excel, you can keep track of when they last hired you and what their children�s names are � that way you can personalize the postcards with writing �Jolly Holly the Elf would love to visit Suzy again this Christmas!�</li> <li>Call the mall, community centers, and anywhere else Santa might appear. When asking about being hired as an Elf or Mrs. Claus, tell them that you are a better choice than an actor because your clown skills make you a wonderful Santa's helper. Your love of children is genuine and comes from the heart. Parents and children waiting in long lines to get their pictures taken with Mr. C need entertainment! Happy parents stay in line and buy more pictures. You can add a touch of magic, a quick wit, and warm heart to each interaction with every child.</li> <li>Need a new costume for your elf, Mrs. Claus or Santa character??? Order it NOW to ensure you will get it in time for November bookings. It takes 6 � 8 weeks from start to finish for most complete costumes, so don�t delay! Check your old costumes to see if they need cleaning or repair. Not ready to invest in a full holiday costume? Consider renting one. Ask your local shop for a discount on multiple rentals or maybe even a rent-to-own deal.</li> <li>Now is also the time to make sure you family calendar events are on your performing calendar. Block off the needed time for family NOW! No amount of money is worth missing the holidays with your family. You may have to make compromises, but now is the time to plan for it. If your loved ones know in advance that they don't get you for Christmas Eve, but you celebrate Christmas day, your absence will be easier to swallow. Call a family meeting. Talk about these sacrifices before you need to make them. You may be surprised what solutions come up. Clowning should not be a burden on your family, it should be a blessing! </li> </ul>     No matter how you dress it, people love entertainment. Start thinking outside the box and expand your horizons. When customers call you to book parties in the month of September through January, ask if they are interested in a "themed performance". They may be calling to book a birthday party, but may have leads for other events. You�ve gotta love that "word of mouth" advertising. I think it is a great way to stay or get connected to other clowns around the world. It can be a wonderful educational tool as you learn what works and what doesn�t for other clowns who are doing what you are doing! For those of you who aren�t that web-savvy and probably had enough trouble just trying to subscribe this e-newsletter, you might be saying, �Face-who?  Twit-what?�  Here�s just a quick primer: E-Groups: A central group that allow message posting by its members on one or more boards, usually with a moderator keeping the peace.  Some groups have very interactive features.  Some have expanded profiles that let each member display more biographical information and personality.  Examples of this type would be Clown Forum and the Mooseburger Yahoo group. Blogs: Reads like a diary entry or news release.  Posted by an individual clown or entertainment company; some are very factual and news-worthy, some are just fun and personal.  Many have photos sprinkled throughout each entry.  Some have opportunities for the public to comment on a blog entry. Social Networking Sites: Facebook, MySpace, and Friendster are examples.  Your profile is where you display all your favorite things and tell the world about yourself.  And then all your friends do that same, and you get to see each other�s favorite things.  Some sites have social features like chat or instant messaging.  Other sites have games, quizzes, and applications for more social interaction.  Twitter would fit in the Social Networking Sites category, except it is limited to just writing status updates (that simply means telling the world how you are feeling or what you just did, i.e. �I just had a bag of pretzels and now I�m thirsty.�) Podcasts/YouTube: A podcast is an audio broadcast (like radio, but on the internet), and sometimes it can also be a video.  It seems everyone and their dear aunt Sally is posting his/her mug and voice all over the internet. But every now and then you come across a particularly well-done video or podcast.  Other sites, like <a href="http://www.youtube.com/" target="_blank">www.YouTube.com</a>, are video sharing sites. YouTube.com has some members who have collected a vast number of old Ringling videos and other historical performance videos.  Plus, many clowns have posted videos of their own work on YouTube.   <hr width="60%" size="3" color="#000000"> These are great way to improve the online presence of your business.  The more folks can find you using the internet, the more likely they are to remember your name and face.  When it�s free and easy to use, online communities can be your company�s friendliest marketing tool. Sheesh, even I�ve got a MySpace page (<a href="http://www.myspace.com/mooseburgeroriginals" target="_blank">http://www.myspace.com/mooseburgeroriginals</a>) for our costumes.  So go out there and learn how to use these fun tools to help your business.  When it comes to using these online sites for your clown arts education, the main thing to remember is that internet information is not necessarily gospel. It is primarily opinion. The old adage, �it has to be true, I read it in the �..� is not true. You really do have to be discerning as the information age has created the ability for anyone with a keyboard and online access to look like an expert. Stuff you read online must be taken in context and with a grain of salt. Opinions are like belly buttons, everybody has one!  <div align="center"><img src="http://mooseburger.com/newsletter/clown-forum125x125.gif" alt="" width="125" height="125" border="0"></div> One of my favorite online communities is <a href="http://www.clown-forum.com/" target="_blank">www.clown-forum.com</a>  I have watched this forum bloom and grow! One side benefit is that many of them have gotten together to attend Mooseburger Clown Arts Camp. That is great for me, but I really believe it is also great for them. Clown-forum has allowed people from all over the world to communicate on a topic they love. Now they have a place to gather and continue their communication face to face. Sweet!     Don�t forget about the Mooseburger Yahoo Group (<a href="http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mooseburger/" target="_blank">http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mooseburger/</a>), too.  It�s a great way to stay on top of any new developments in the Mooseburger world and meet your fellow Moose Campers before you meet in person.  The great thing about message boards and e-groups, is that there is something for every odd little niche group.  For the handful of people out there who are Auguste clowns, over 40, and like to twist balloons while unicycling through the Swiss Alps as they yodel, I bet there�s a group for you!  The good news is, if you land yourself in a group that just doesn�t jive with any of your opinions or business ethics, there are bound to be 10 more groups out there that will fit you just fine.  So shop around and have fun.  There are pros and cons of communication online.  The exchange of ideas and tips, the encouragement and mutual-appreciation societies, the opportunities to challenge yourself - these are all fantastic for stretching and growing our craft.  But you can�t expect to toss hundreds of performers together without getting a couple with hot tempers.  Opposing opinions will arise and theories will conflict; that�s just the nature of this arena. Many user-run groups have moderators and/or posting guidelines � be sure to read the rules if you�re unsure what is off-topic or off-limits for the group.  If you find yourself in a community or a conversation thread that evolves into a disagreement, remember no to take it too seriously. The reason you and everybody else are in that group is to feed your clowning and help one another, right?  So keep that in mind, be constructive, and stay civil at all costs. Nobody has ever won an argument by hitting people over the head with heavy-handed censure and insults (look up �flame wars� sometime). While online communication gives us a freedom we don�t always gets in the real world, a good rule of thumb for online message boards is, �Don�t post anything you wouldn�t say out loud in person�.  We need to maintain a level of professionalism to support the art of clowning and not come off as some kind of nutty fringe group. You never know who will be reading your post! Putting something on a chat group is akin to plastering it on a billboard. When all else fails, contact the person offline for a more detailed conversation. Remember that this is supposed to be FUN. Agree to disagree! A variety of opinions discussed respectfully allows for growth, education, and enlightenment!      I belong to a Yahoo group for Ringling clown alumni. It has a very interesting thread running on traditional looking clowns vs. more theatrical �lite� looking clowns. I find the conversation very interesting. I even learned that some folks are worried that traditional clowns are doomed for distinction! �Ha!� I say! Here is my response: <blockquote>�I can tell you that traditional clown costumes are alive and well. I can speak from the experience of attending over a dozen clown conventions and conferences a year all over the country. People who get into clowning still love to wear brightly colored clothes and funny wigs. They do it for themselves as much as they do it for the kids. A crazy costume helps people step away from their serious side and embrace that part of them that needs to play. Lighter make-ups and more theatrical and realistic costumes are popular with folks who do not want to wear as much make-up, or just like the look of it. Some are afraid of the skill they think they need to apply a more �clowny� looking face. Either way both types of clowns are out there performing side by side with great results. The art of clowning may be changing in look, but it is alive and well.�  </blockquote> Here is something that does need mentioning. Beginning clowns often need the colorful make-up and costuming as a tool. Face it, when we first get started we are running on heart not skill. After a clown develops skills they often progress into a theatrical character. Not always; but sometimes. Supporting ALL kinds of looks for clowns is a good thing. Variety keeps more people participating as they find their �look�. The �fear of clowns� thing has made a slight impact of the number of people getting into clowning; less people, but more quality people. I believe the people who �just can�t help themselves� will be come clowns no matter what. Those are the people we want in this art form.   By the way, 95 people are coming from all over the world to study the art of clowning in Minnesota this year at Moose Camp. Ringling Alumni Staff includes Karen Bell, Karen and Greg DeSanto, Robin Eurich, Christopher Hudert and me plus other great staff, Marcela Murad, Fred Baisch, Rex Nolen, and Brenda Marshall. I thought attendance would be down in this economy, but it is up!  That�s my two cents worth for the month of June! Take the time to enjoy this summer. Have fun clowning, but put some time on the calendar for family and down-time for yourself. Quality quiet time really refreshes the soul. You need:  1 black sharpie marker 3 ping pong balls 2 paper clips or clothes pins 5� x 8� green felt or fleece Fabric or craft glue Stapler or needle and thread  <div align="center"><img src="http://mooseburger.com/newsletter/ipod-pattern.jpg" alt="" width="475" height="265" border="0"></div> Print out this pattern and fold it.  Fold material in half, trace pattern onto it, and cut out the half-moon shape. We performed four clown magic shows at a school in Martin, followed by balloons and face painting. At the Women and Children�s Crisis Center in Nitra, we did not appear �in face�, but Wamper never goes far without his balloon bag, and he delighted the youngsters and adults alike with his creations. In Nitra, we also performed at the Sunday church service �in face�.  Everywhere we went we stressed our message �Sharing God�s Love through Laughter�.  Our trip was truly a wonderful experience � words cannot fully describe the joy we felt in sharing with our new Slovakian friends; we know what it means to say we received more than we gave. If the media were to be believed, every clown is some kind of sicko or serial killer! All children and adults have some deep-seated fear of anyone in a red nose. Yet thousands of people belong to clown clubs all over the United States. Hundreds of clowns show up for conventions across the country to learn more about it, and share their love of clowning. Mooseburger Clown Arts Camp is rapidly filling up. My phone continues to ring with people who are interested in getting started in clowning or are replacing and up grading their supplies. Believe it or not, people who are not clowns read this newsletter (Hi Lyn!) because they find it interesting! Hmmm!  When people think about the healing power of humor, they usually think about how humor assists people who are sick. Caring clowning is very popular as clowns discover the benefit of bringing laughs to folks in hospitals and nursing homes. I think there is more to it than the old proverb �laughter is the best medicine�. Maybe we should consider another quote��physician heal thyself!�  If the media were to be believed, those of us in funny business should all be out of business. Not so! I think the real reason is simple. There is a powerful healing power in humor. Numerous articles have been written on the subject laughter reduces pain, increases job performance, connects people emotionally, and improves the flow of oxygen to the heart and brain! We all need a good laugh these days. Making people laugh is even better medicine. When we make people laugh we feel better. A clown colleague once told me that the best clowns had terrible childhoods. It makes sense that those who had troubles of their own made themselves whole by making others laugh. One clown told me that he had a long list of personal health problems. He told me �I have arthritis, but Jumbo doesn�t!� He never felt any of his aches or pains while he was performing.    Clown school, conventions, and camps are great places to go and laugh! When we all get together, we share ideas, tears, and just have a good chuckle. Clowns in and out of make-up find lots to laugh about. We look at the world with a different set of eyes -- Clown eyes! I often wonder what the hotel staff thinks when we show up? Our theme parties at conventions are a real scream. Everyone dresses up according to the theme. It is true I come home exhausted, but I am better for it. I truly believe it is because we operate on a different philosophy than normal people. We don�t ask �Wouldn�t it be funny IF�?�  We say� �Won�t it be funny WHEN�?�, and then we go and do it!   Sometimes at Mooseburger Camp a clown will bring a non-clown spouse along. By the end of the week they end up in make-up too. Why? Having fun is contagious! It also may be interesting to know that sometimes folks come to Mooseburger Camp because they have had a personal tragedy or sadness.  Mooseburger Camp is a great place to laugh and cry and take time to deal with your feelings.  That could be the main reason people are still drawn to an art form that is generally degraded in the media. Thankfully there are still people who are willing to admit that they just love clowns!   I think we are still in good shape to find grateful audiences for our tomfoolery. The world still needs clowns and, more importantly, the people behind the make-up who love to do it. So if you are worried that the art of clowning is in trouble: relax. There are still plenty of people willing to slap on the red nose and, better yet, there is a grateful world in need of our silly services! (okay, so I�m a little late) Some of you may wonder why new clowns are called �Firsts of May� and where the saying came from.  Did you know that All Clowns are born on May first? It's true! According to tradition, all clowns are born on May first, which is the reason why a rookie, or beginner clown is known as a "First of May."  Some believe that the tradition of "First of May" may have begun with Joseph "Joey" Grimaldi. Others believe that it begun with the American circus. Which ever is the truth, it is an important holiday for clowns. The beginning of May was traditionally the time when circuses made their season run in the northern hemisphere. May being the beginning of the warm months, it was an ideal time of the year to launch the circus tour, which ran through the summer months. In the southern hemisphere, circuses traditionally started their tour around the month of August, but even those folks celebrate May First as �All Clowns Birthday.�  In this modern world, where nature and seasons are no deterrent for entertainment, circuses run their tour all year long, but one thing is constant, clowns continue to be born on May first. He said, �In Mooseburger I�ll invest!�  Now our friend is all smiles. He�s confident and clowning in style,       Quality and value,       And comfort, too! That Mooseburger will last him a long while!  (We thought this little limerick was so cute, we put it in our next Clowning Around and The New Calliope ads!  Be sure to look for it next month!)  <hr width="90%" size="3" color="#000000"> <A NAME="tip"></a> Tips of the Month  BLOWIN� IN THE WIND Pin your hat to your wig! Use safety pins and pin from the inside of your wig. This keeps your hat on, even in the wind! Now you can jump around, bend, bow, and shake as much as you want without worrying about your hat slipping sideways.  Too many clowns get home after a parade to find out their favorite hat is long gone! This works for hair bows as well.  <hr width="60%" size="3" color="#000000"> GLITTER GLAM-O-RAMA! Lose your nose?  Forgot to pack glue?  No worries!  Here�s a step-by-step guide to painting on a glitter-tipped clown nose, perfect for any clown makeup style: <div align="center"><img src="http://mooseburger.com/newsletter/nose-tip-1.jpg" alt="" width="450" height="190" border="0"></div> <ol type="1"> <li>After you have done your makeup and powdered, clean a small dot from the tip of your nose.  Using Red greasepaint (I�m using a Mehron Jumbo Pro-Pencil), draw a circle around the tip and fill it in. If you�re not sure how big you want it to be, it�s better to start smaller than what you think and then expand it (rather then the other way around).  If you don�t want to put glitter on it, then simply re-powder that area and you�re good to go!  But if you want to add some sparkle, read on�</li> </ol> <div align="center"><img src="http://mooseburger.com/newsletter/nose-tip-2.jpg" alt="" width="450" height="191" border="0"></div> <ol start="2" type="1"> <li>Hold a pot of micro-fine glitter (I�m using Mehron Red GlitterWear Dust) near your nose and use a dry finger to dip into the pot.  Pat the glitter onto your nose.  Repeat this until the entire area of greasepaint is covered with glitter. Dad died with great grace and dignity in his home surrounded by family after a two year bout with cancer.  In 1989 my Dad suggested I start my own business after working for Ringling for so many years. Without my parents support and guidance, I never would have been able to build my business to what it is today. I learned how to treat customers, put together displays, and deal with vendors all from working in my parents� departments store in a small town. Little did I know that selling shoes, clothes, TV sets, and horse harnesses would teach me how to run my costume business. But it did. Dad taught me how to treat people fairly and stand my ground when necessary. He taught me work ethic and values that see me through thick and thin. I learned that you also build your business and family but also serve your community. I hold all these values close to my heart.   This month�s newsletter is about clowning through tough economic times. Dad also showed me how to do that. With the encroachment of big discount stores in neighboring towns, my Dad saw the change of times where people didn't shop in a small town department store anymore. He continued to redefine his business including his shoe and zipper repair business. I moved into my Dad's big department store with him. As his business modified and became smaller I took over more of the building until I was able to buy the building from him. Dad continued his shoe repair business until last year. As I walk though my Dad's building today I see the mark he made on this building and this community. The dressing rooms he built are now used for my costume rental business. I still use his counters, racks and methods in my store.   The next lesson in life Dad will teach me is how to clown through tough emotional times. Like all the lessons Dad taught me, he taught me well.  Thank you for all your prayers, help and support for me and my family.   In laughter and tears, <table cellspacing="2" cellpadding="2" border="0"> <tr> <td>            </td> <td>Tricia Manuel </td> </tr> </table> David Andrew Manuel was born February 1, 1934 in Watkins to Pat and El (Graf) Manuel. He served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. David married Cathy Schleppenbach on October 9, 1954 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Cold Spring. They moved to Maple Lake in 1955, where he owned and operated Manuel's Department Store for 53 years. David was a member of St. Timothy's Catholic Church, Catholic Order of Foresters, Maple Lake American Legion Post 131 and the Maple Lake Village Players (Maple Lake Community Theatre). He also served as president of the Maple Lake Commercial Club (Chamber of Commerce), was an original board member of the Maple Lake High School and served his community in the Maple Lake Fire Department. Dave enjoyed fishing, golfing, gun collecting, watching & playing baseball and playing cards with his grandchildren.    <hr width="60%" size="3" color="#000000"> Ain�t Got A Barrel Of Money�  I hope you all had a happy April Fool�s Day! It is kind of a lost holiday. Hallmark and the retailers just haven�t found a way to get us to spend money on this ancient holiday.   But clowning through hard times is no joke. Many people have lost jobs and are hurting right now. You don�t need me to tell you that. The question remains: what do you do during hard times as a clown? Your business may be down right now. Take this slow time and use it to your advantage. Americans always rebound. We did after the great Depression and also the stock market crash of the 80�s. The question is never �if?� -- it is always �when?�  Even in the regular cycle of a business year there are slow times and busy times. With my business of The Costume Shoppe and Pricilla Mooseburger Originals there is a natural ebb and flow. I would be a fool if I told you I wanted the pressure and busy-ness of Halloween to be all year. I would not survive if we did a Moose Camp more than once a year! We all need some down time in our business so we can do the things that keep our business going! Remember when I say �business� I don�t mean this article is for those of you who charge for your services. Clowning is a business whether you clown for charity or profit. Anything worth doing is worth doing well, especially if you do clowning for charity.   In slow times the best thing to do is to take a deep breath and relax. Now is your chance to redefine what you do, because you actually have the time to do it. First go through all your props. Take a critical look. It is time to organize, give away, fix, or throw away the things you don�t need. You might be sentimental about that beat up old prop. But your audience may not see it that way.   Rework your show. If you have some extra time, look at writing a new show or adding something new to the show you have. If business has dropped off, it may be because you have not updated your show. It is much easier to not rehire if money is tight because you keep offering the same thing. Having a new show gives old customers a reason to bring you back time and time again. Be the entertainment they can�t live without! It is extra work. But it is how to keep working. It also keeps you from feeling burned out in the long run.   What about your costume? Now IS the time to invest, make a new one, or have one made. Competition will be tougher in hard times. You do need to look your best. If you can�t afford a new costume, then consider adding a new piece. A new vest can revive a whole outfit. Replace a tired-looking wig at a very reasonable cost. Get a new hat or add some new accessories like collars and cuffs. Polish your shoes! Replacing shoe laces can give an old pair of shoes new life. If you can�t replace your clown dress put a petticoat under it to give it a totally different look. You can revive an old petticoat with a can of extra stiff hair spray!    Promotion is everyone�s business whether you are a volunteer or professional clown. Everyone should have business cards. You shouldn�t walk out the door without them! They can be produced inexpensively on a computer and there are also companies who do it for free as long as you let them advertise on your card. Your audience wants to get in touch with you! Be prepared. You would be surprised how many clowns give out cards that do not have their area code on them! Do you have a coloring sheet with your information on the bottom to use as a giveaway? It doesn�t have to be a full sheet. It can be a quarter of a sheet. Once colored it will end up on Mom�s or Grandma�s refrigerator for months -- sometimes years! Don�t miss that opportunity. Make you own by putting a clear transparency over your clown picture. Outline your clown face with a magic marker. Then run the transparency through a copy machine and presto you have your own coloring page! Put together small posters to promote your services. Don�t be afraid to work out of make-up if necessary. You may want to consider a dressed down look and bill yourself as a children�s entertainer. Sadly sometimes folks just don�t want a clown, they want something less cartoony and more sophisticated.   Call the folks who have booked you in the past. Don�t assume you will have that festival job again for the fall. Call! If they are wavering you may be able to offer them something different or scaled back to keep the job. Everyone is facing budget cuts. Be willing to negotiate your services. Now I am not saying that you do the same job for less. You need to work with people. Maybe this year you are only there for two hours instead of four. Perhaps there is something else you can do. Be creative and negotiate. They appreciate you thinking of them and coming up with an idea that allows them to have you at their event within their tight budget.   Sometimes you do need to give it away. If you find yourself with a dead weekend with nothing booked, get dressed and go to a nursing home. Call first of course! But you really need to give back. There are so many lonely people in those places, people who have no family left. Or who are just plain forgotten. Spend an hour in a nursing home and you will be repaid 100 times over. There are people there who will ask for your card. Be sure your pockets are full. Your heart will be full when you are done.   As my good friend Fred Baisch says, when God gives you a gift, you�re supposed to use it for the good of His people.  Use it, or loose it!  :o)  One story I saw on the news last week was about a hair stylist who is giving FREE haircuts and styles to unemployed folks before their job interviews.  She is a high-end stylist who normally charges $40 - $70 for her services, but does the work on her free time at no charge.  This is just one example of how someone is using their talent to help others in this tough economic time.  What about clowning?  Can you think of some ways in which you could employ this practice in your business?  What about a little kid whose parents just lost their jobs, or a day car center that is going bankrupt?  If you already are in the practice of not charging for your services (hospital or gospel clowning, etc.), then perhaps you could get some publicity out of it, just as the hair stylist did (her story was broadcast on national evening news!). You could really help bring attention to an ailing business or a family in need.  Many clowns tell me they are too busy to go to a clown convention or Moose Camp. Now may be your chance to come to camp. You can learn a new skill that will improve your performance. Education always pays for itself in the long run.   You may not have the money right now to go to camp. Start saving for next year, a little bit each week will build up fast. Look for ways to save. Just cutting out buying coffee, pop or snacks at convenience stores can save you a bundle. Now is the time to look at your life and decide what a �need� is and what just a �want� is. I have had to do it myself. As much as I love good coffee I used to think I �needed� it every day. Not so. Now when I have a really good cup I appreciate it so much more.   Look at your life. What can you do to save? What can you do to recharge and renew? Hard times can actually help us all. It forces us to look at the true meaning of life. What is really important and how to hold on to it. Clowning is important because it makes people smile. A smile is magic. It transports someone from where they are to a better place, even if it is only for a few moments. Clowning is more important now than ever. Smiles and Laughs are something everyone can afford and no one can live without, so get busy!          <hr width="60%" size="3" color="#000000"> I invited our Moose Camp staff to include their thoughts on this topic:  When Pricilla said she was going to talk about clowning during difficult times, economic and otherwise, I started thinking.  Shortly before, I had been discussing business with a friend of mine and compared to the last couple of years, January and February gigs were up.  March is slow but I am booking gigs for this summer.  So I started looking at what I am doing now and what I have been doing for the last 12 to 18 months.  One of the biggest things I had changed over the last year or two were the types of restaurants I worked at for Family nights.  Now I have been entertaining weekly at restaurants for about 7 or 8 years now.  My first restaurant was a Damon�s Ribs.  A nice chain to work with, good atmosphere, good clientele, however this one was missing the key ingredient... location... After a number of years new shopping centers and traffic patterns had moved and business was not great and a good portion of the customers were traveling which kind of limited extra birthday parties.  All in all the employees were great to work with, and it really helped me develop the experience to confidently approach other establishments.  Last summer I identified a neighboring town where the income level was considerably higher than local average.  I landed three restaurants around town but far enough apart that I was seen by a large portion of the population.  Not only have the tips been better and more consistent, but I have had a fair number of birthday parties from my repeat clients.  Since many people in this area are business owners or at least decision-makers, I have also increased my corporate work.  Restaurant work isn�t an instant fix for your wallet but over time it has the potential to radically increase your business.  Why?  1) Exposure � you are regularly seen working.  The more people see you the more they remember you.  2) Experience � each time you are at the restaurant you have the opportunity to practice, your character, your speed, your variety, your interactions with the customers.  3) Money � you are being paid on a regular basis for doing what you love.     Another project I�ve been working on recently is the daycare market.  I had a client that was interested in having me at her daughter�s daycare.  The director of the facility expressed some concern that the children might be scared.  So now I am slowly introducing myself to the directors of as many daycares as I can.  I pull out the phonebook and a mapping program and basically canvas an area.  I make sure I am very professionally dressed and carry a leather portfolio in which I have a couple of brochures and business cards.  I make sure before I leave that the director has both.  Very few entertainers actually visit daycares, usually if they think about doing anything at all they just send information in the mail.  Even though they usually don�t have much time it is really helpful for the director to see you as a professional before some stranger who looks like a clown comes into her facility.  It eases their minds, and if they are working on a program of some sort who do you think they are more likely to call?  Again this isn�t an instant fix.  I am booking gigs for summer programs right now, but as I develop relationships with the different facilities I see a number of possibilities.  Even though I still have plenty of opening in my schedule right now, it is reassuring to see the number of bookings in my calendar grow.        ~   Dan �Fitzwilly� Langwell  <hr width="60%" size="3" color="#000000"> Ok here are some thoughts through tough times. If you have an advertising budget and can afford it you need to continue with it. Too many people drop it all together and then when things get better they have to recreate themselves. Something we are playing with is creating a Facebook profile. This is a free service and might work for some people as an inexpensive way of promotion. Get a teenager to help you build it. I am using mine in connection with my web site.  Always keep an eye on where you could use your services.  This year I tried some trade shows; some were good some not so good. Next year I have a new spot to go to in the winter. If I hadn't given it a shot, it would not have happened. This can also be a good opportunity to get your foot in the door somewhere. If you are struggling for business, chances are somebody else is too! Use your services as a promotion point, maybe you can work for tips or with the understanding when things are better they bring you back for pay. Why not barter at the local restaurants or theatres? You have to eat to and it takes money so why not swap out? I used to do a theatre and they did partial money and partial tickets. I gave them to my sister's kids and potential clients. Now is the time to dig out that balloon video you have been meaning to do. You can also use this as a time to sell companies on the fact they need to use you as a promotional item. The housing market is tough right now.  Once I did a realty company�s open house; I entertained the kids while the realtors tried to sell the parents.  Check out the car lots they could sure use some help. Keep thinking of where you can go and who you could can help benefit. The main thing is: do NOT slink back, keep moving ahead. I truly believe in these tough times people who really care about their kids will want to show them a good time. Things are slow here through the winter, and now suddenly things are getting busy.
