Who
Needs a Clown Coach?
Everyone can benefit from a
new perspective from time to time. Time passes quickly and before you
know, it we have been doing the same thing for years, stuck in the same
performance rut. I have experienced that with my own routines. Because
I was not performing on a regular basis (well I am teaching and that
is certainly a kind of performance, but you know what I mean) I woke
up one day and realized it had been 20 years since I had created a new
solo gag for myself. I shared my progress with you over the past few
months in this newsletter. I always had a good excuse, I just couldn't
move forward.
I was also interested in doing
something new and innovative in the clown arts education field. But
I wasn't sure what it would be. I felt stuck. The only way I was able
to get past the block was with a coach. I loved it when my clown friends
would help me with gags, but we live all over the country so the opportunity
to work face-to-face on a routine is rare. I knew I needed a change
in my life. I decided that instead of just talking about it I would
open my mind to the possibilities. The best way to drive away positive
change is to say "that won't work''. When you say "that won't
work" you are right. You are slamming the door on possibilities big
and small. Granted, not every idea is a winner. But if you keep your
mind open you may see a seed of an idea that could grow into a real
possibility.
I opened my heart and said,
"Lord I need a change. I need something new. I trust in the possibilities
you will bring my way. I will keep my eyes open for them." A string
of happy accidents came my way and I signed up for an intensive life
coaching course. It has changed my life in many ways. Not only was I
coached, but I participate in study groups, and conference call lectures.
I found ways to make meaningful changes in my business and my life in
a very short period of time. Oh yeah…and I created a really fun new
gag in the process!
I learned the difference between
a coach and a counselor. I really had no interest in being a counselor.
Here is the analogy that sold it for me. A therapist tells you why you
are afraid to ride a bicycle, a counselor tells you why you should ride
a bicycle, a mentor shows you how to ride a bicycle. But a coach runs
along side you and encourages you to ride the bicycle. You see -- no
one really makes change until they are ready to do it. No one can do
it for you. But when you are ready, it is great to have some one on
your side to cut through crap, help you leap over obstacles, and sort
out your thoughts. I also learned that coaching is asking people powerful
questions. You see -- people aren't broken; they don't need to be
fixed. If you ask folks the right questions they will be able to sort
things out and move forward. Coaches help you look forward and accomplish
meaningful change that lasts.
Life coaching is a fairly new
industry. But as I continued my studies I realized that I had been coaching
clowns for three decades. The best part of clown coaching was the PEP
talks I gave to each person signed up for Mooseburger Camp. The PEP
talks were Personal Education Plans. I go over the goals of each student
and look at the schedule for camp. Together we would put together a
comprehensive schedule of course work and workshops to cover their goals.
I have been doing it for 4 years. It works! The clowns coming to camp
have a better idea of what to expect and spend less time worrying about
what workshops to take once they get to camp. They have a road map.
They can take a detour if they want. Nothing is carved in stone. But
they have a plan. That makes all the difference. I have seen the results.
I listen, make suggestions, sort out ideas, and help campers make good
decisions with their time at camp.
I held my first set of conference
calls for Moose Camp in May. I have started individual coaching in June.
I am pleased with the results. This new stage of my life is exciting.
I look forward to connecting with clowns in a more in-depth way. My
goal is to assist creative people in finding a more meaningful path
to joy through their performances.
This year I turn 50 years old
and I am embarking on a new facet of clown arts education. Consider
joining me -- keep your fork, the best is yet to come!
In love and Laughter!

Clown Arts Camp
July
31- August 5, 2012 in Buffalo, MN
One of the
best weeks of your life!
--
Clown Arts education at its finest --
We are already
preparing for next year's Moose Camp! Write the dates on your
calendar and start planning now. Registration will officially
open September 1st -- get ready! Here is a helpful
timeline and budget to make sure you get to Moose Camp in 2012:
August- Take a look
at your calendar for July and August 2012. Research your travel options.
Calculate the money needed for registration, travel, and other expenses.
Then read our list of "Frequently Used Excuses" in case you have any lingering doubts.
September
- Ask for the time off at work. Sit down with your family to discuss
your decision. Register for Moose Camp and sign up for the automatic
monthly payment plan.
October- Apply for
the Ralph Pounder Memorial Scholarship; which gives you $350 towards
your registration costs (winners are announced in April).
November- Tell everyone
that you are going to Moose Camp, and write $$$ on your "Christmas
Wish List" in case they want to gift you with money to help fund your
trip. Family and friends will want to support you in your dreams, and
this is a great chance to let them help you.
December- Look over
your clown props, costumes, shoes, and other supplies to see if they
need repairs. Six months is a good lead-time on heavy-duty repairs and
replacements.
January- Make your
travel plans and purchase your airplane tickets. Three to six months
ahead of your flight date is the time to get the best deals on airfare.
February- Send in
your Travel Form and Health Emergency Form to the Mooseburger Office.
March- Send in your
PEP Talk Form to the Mooseburger Office.
April- Look over
the schedule and consider which course and workshops you'll take.
May- Participate
in the conference calls with the other campers.
June- Have your PEP
Talk (stands for "Personal Education Plan") with Pricilla.
Pay off the rest of your registration fee.
July- Pack and re-pack
your suitcase to make sure you can fit everything you need. Walk
the dog, water the plants, and kiss your loved ones good-bye for the
week. The next time they see you, it will be the new-and-improved
version of yourself!

Budget
The amount of money you'll
need to budget for Moose Camp could be as low as $700, or as high as
twice that figure. It all depends on these four factors:
Travel
- Will you be driving or flying? Gas for an 800-mile trip could
cost over $100. Airfare from California is approximately $350.
If you are flying, you will probably want the $60 round-trip bus shuttle
for camp.
Registration- Will
you be lodging at camp, or commuting each day? $895 is the Complete
Package, which includes education, food, and lodging. $695 is
the Overlander Package, which includes education and food, but you must
provide your own lodging. You might want to add the $30 Refund
Insurance, which allows you to cancel up until June 1st
and get your down-payment refunded. If you need a private room
at camp, that will be an additional $250.
Food- If you are
driving, you will be stopping for meals on the way up here. If
you are flying, you won't have to worry too much about budgeting for
food. At camp, all the meals are included in the registration
fee.
Shopping
- Really, this is entirely up to you. It would be a fair guess
to set aside at least $100 for clown supplies, makeup, and other fun
stuff along the way.
What to save
each month for the next 10 months:
TRAVEL =
$10 to $45
REGISTRATION
= $70 to $90
FOOD/SHOPPING
= $15
See how easy
that is?? If you start planning this early, everything will fall
into place by the time June rolls around next year. Make it easy
in yourself and your wallet.
"You will
do foolish things, but do them with enthusiasm!"
