Stop—Drop—and READ!

As you all know there are all types of clowns. When we think of clowns we often think of circus clowns, parade clowns and party clowns. More recently our horizons have been broadened to include hospital and caring clowns (though many have been doing this work for a very long time, Shrine clowns for instance).

I would like to introduce you to a group of clowns who are fast becoming my favorites: Fire and Safety clowns. These are volunteer and professional fire firefighters and EMTs who teach fire and life safety to children. It also includes regular clowns who have the passion to keep kids and their families safe.

I was first introduced to these great people through Brent Rollins of the McKinney Fire Dept in Texas. I was intrigued. My father was a volunteer fireman for 26 years in our small town. As a child I wanted to be a fireman. But at that time only men could be firemen. So I told my Dad that was OK, I would be a Shriner then! …I was kind of a slow learner!

I was introduced to a group of people we are passionate about teaching not only Stop Drop and Roll, but all kinds of life safety messages. Over the past few years I have been fortunate enough to attend the Life and Fire Safety (LAFS) convention in Texas and most recently the Arizona Fire and Burn Educators Conference in Bullhead City.

I learned quickly that their mission is to teach kids to be safe which in turn will keep their entire families safe. But also that these clowns are FUNNY! Their shows are hilarious without loosing site of the message intended for children. Fire and Safety clowns use all kinds of different methods to get their point across. Never did I see a dull lecture within their shows. They creatively use puppets, songs, slapstick comedy, wonderful props, and sets. I was fortunate enough to be able to watch a number of their shows at the Bullhead City conference. One would think that after being a professional clown and teacher for over 25 years I would have seen it all. Not so.  I laughed out loud and often.  Much of the humor is tongue and cheek, but very effective. Funny songs are written to familiar tunes. Here are a few of the messages I saw taught:

E.D.I.T.H. – Exit Drills In the Home

Tools and Toys - Teaching children there is a difference between the two, and they should only play with toys not tools. The song they used was so catchy I am still humming it!

Pool Safety - Always have a buddy, wear a life vest, and jump in feet first to protect your head.

Kitchen Safety - Have a three feet “no play” zone around the stove, turn the handles in so you don’t bump them and have a “responsible” adult present whenever you cook. I like the “responsible” part!

Bike Safety - Always wear a helmet and other proper safety equipment.

Street Safety - Look left, look right, look left, and GO!

Stranger Danger - This includes internet safety messages that are very important these days. I was very touched that the Safety Clowns genuinely care enough to support ALL of these messages, not just Fire safety.

Of course the traditional fire safety messages were there as well. Crawl low to avoid the bad smoke, feel the door with the back of your hand to be sure it is cool, go to your meeting place, and never go back in to get toys or pets.

Talk about effective use of props and sets! I saw a train station, café, pirate ship, pool with lifeguard, kitchen.  You name it, they did it. I was never bored, or felt talked down to. The messages were timely, funny, and easy to remember.

Here is the part that really touches my heart. These guys and gals do this for the love of children. Many don’t have budgets for the shows they produce and dig into their own pockets to make it happen. They use their own time, money, and talents to put together first class shows and programs. They ROCK! Oh and they never complain about how hot a costume or wig is!!! (Maybe that just entertains me?)  I had a great time learning and laughing right along with them.  And I certainly have learned that I need to expand and specialize my merchandise for this new avenue of clowning.  I couldn’t have survived the conference without the help of Sweet Connie (who, I don’t think could survive without firemen!  Hee-hee!).  Thank you, Connie! Here she is, surrounded by a cadre of those buff-n-burly fun-loving hunks from McKinney:

If you find this kind of volunteer clowning intriguing, I suggest you check out the following organizations. They could use your help to get the message out to kids of all ages! They have websites, newsletters, and blogs to help educate.  Most are 501(c)3 non-profit organizations. Members include police, fire, EMS, school teachers, principals, volunteers and anyone who has a passion to teach safety education to children. These sites will link you to many others:

Make-Up Tip of the Month

Tired of the wrinkles you see when you put the white under your eyes? Reduce it and blend it! Be careful not to put too much white on the upper eyelid. It will crease and look yucky. Be sure to pat out any wrinkles or creases right before you powder your make-up. Be quick about it! The longer make-up sits on your face un-powdered the more time it has to interact with the natural oils of your skin and begin to separate. Let the powder sit on your face a minute or two before you brush it off for a really good set dry finish

April Fool’s Day Idea

Okay, you’re a clown, so you’re always playing the fool.  But what about the rest of your family and friends?  Have you ever wished you could spread the tom-foolery to your loved ones?  Well, here’s the perfect way to deliver the laughs: a PRUNE bouquet!

Maple Lake Floral has created this one-of-a-kind flower arrangement for those occasions when lively pretty flowers just don’t send the right message.  They put together a grouping of dead (or mostly-dead) flowers, live greenery, and then attach real prunes to the tops of sturdy flower stems.  They can ship this awful artful bouquet to you, ready to present (or re-ship) to the lucky recipient.  And here’s a little poem you can print off to send with it:

Here is just a little gift…

You’re getting on and not too swift.

The bloom may be off the rose,

There may be an ache in your toes

Nothing meant to make you swoon --

Just a gift with a bit of PRUNE

      Your hair is gray and your wrinkles might show;

May this bouquet help you get up and go!

You can order an exclusive Prune Bouquet from Maple Lake Floral online or call them at 320-963-8860.  Prices vary according to size and shipping.

Another Happy Customer!

I love it!  It looks really good. Thanks so much. I can’t say enough good stuff about you. The costume is great and I got a wig from you not to long ago and that process also was great.  In a day and age when most places don't care about the customer anymore, it’s nice to see you still care.  Thanks again.

~   Mike Reading

Thank YOU, Mike, for letting us know we’re doing our job right!  I wish we had a photo of your new custom costume to display, but maybe we’ll have to post that in another newsletter….to be continued!

If any of our customers out there have just received a new custom costume item and would like to be featured in this section of the Moose Newz, please email us your testimonial and a photo of yourself in clown makeup and the new item.  We would love to show you off to the thousands of clowns that read this newsletter.  Email those items to: katie@mooseburger.com. And don’t forget to give us your clown name AND your real name!  :o)
