Make-up Tips and Myths!

Clown make-up…I will never forget the feeling I got when I first saw myself in whiteface. I felt beautiful for the first time in my life. Clown make-up transformed me from an awkward doubtful teenager into a beautiful magical creature. I could do anything. I had faith in myself for the first time.

Now, not everyone has that kind of experience. The experience of clown make-up can often be frustrating! The reality is we make it more difficult than necessary. First off, it does NOT need to be complicated. It is meant only to enhance our natural features so we look comical -- it exaggerates our expressions. We need to learn how to work with the medium of make-up and then come up with a design that works for our facial features and our own ability! In other words if you have a tremor or failing eyesight, skip the elaborate outlining and design! You are no less of a clown because your mouth is not perfectly outlined in black! BUT if you can do it, and like the results, go for it.

Below you will find some helpful hints ideas and stories from some of the staff at Mooseburger Camp. I have also included some information on the different kinds of make-up and what their properties are…

So what is the difference between CreamBlend Stick, Foundation GreasePaint, and StarBlend Cake make-up?

Good Question! I called the pros at Mehron to get the skinny on the difference in these three products. First off, CreamBlend Sticks and Foundation Greasepaint are just that -- make-up made with petroleum products, thus the name "Grease". They are water proof, need to be set with a powder to eliminate stickiness, and must be removed with some kind of agent to cut the grease.

CreamBlend by Mehron comes in a tube stick. It rolls up like deodorant to reveal more make-up as you use it. It really works great as you can directly apply it to your skin without using your fingers, brush, or a sponge. The application is creamy and easy to work with. CreamBlend Sticks are lighter in texture and provides a more sheer appearance.
It is great for natural skin tones and shading in colors. Mehron is the only company still manufacturing make-up in stick form. Most of the other companies, Steins and Bob Kelly, have gone out of business and Mehron is the one left standing.

Foundation GreasePaint provides something a bit different. It comes in a flat circular container. I recommend you use a brush for colors like red, blue, or black. The skin colors like Juvenile, Warm Natural Tan, and Mid Light Olive can be applied with your fingers or a sponge. Grease Paint gives you a more dense, solid coverage. This can be important if you are trying to change the color of your skin tone for Auguste clown faces.

StarBlend is a cake make-up whose main ingredient is talc. You can activate it with a damp sponge or use it dry with a brush for highlights. It is sweat resistant, but not water proof like greasepaint. It is used primarily in the theater, but clowns have discovered it and are using it as well.
It is great for a light look. It is easy to apply and easy to clean up. It does not have the all-day endurance qualities of grease paint. However, it would be great for hospital clowns and folks doing short performances.

What about Shelf Life for Greaspaint?
Another good question! Some folks advocate replacing make-up every year. Personally, I thought this was kind of obsessive. I have been using the same red from Mehron since Clown College 25 years ago! I only have red on my mouth. I never really thought much about it; just kept using it. So I went to the fine folks at Mehron to get the real scoop. Gene said that if you keep the container closed between applications it should be fine indefinitely. I guess that explains the 25 years! But there is one thing that can cause make-up to spoil and that is heat. If you see beads of oil perspiration on your make-up, that is normal. But if it starts to change color, that means things are starting to separate and go bad. For example, if your clown white gets a yellow crust around the edges, toss it!

In love and Laughter!

Make-up Tips & Stories
from the Staff of Mooseburger Clown Arts Camp!

~ From Brenda Marshall:
I have a tip about nose glue. I wear a ProNose and for many years I struggled with different nose glues. I found that especially in the summer, when I wear my nose almost every day, I would end up with small patches of skin coming off the end of my own real nose. Then a friend told me about using eyelash adhesive. It's inexpensive, you can buy it at your local drug store, it's made for the sensitive skin around the eyes, therefore easy on the skin and it holds the nose on, even in the Texas heat!! I use the "Andrea" or "Duo" brands. They come in a small white tube, usually packaged in a box and hanging near the eyelashes in the cosmetic department. I apply the glue to the entire surface of the nose, spreading it around with the tip of the tube. Then I position the nose and hold it for just a few seconds. By the time I'm walking out the door, the glue has set and the nose is on until I take it off.

In the 23 years that I was a white face, I used several brands of white grease paint. Sometimes I would change brands because my skin would change and the brand I was using just didn't hold up or look right any more. Sometimes I would change just to try the newest make-up that came out. The one thing I required from my white make-up was the ability to last through what could be long hours on some days and especially through the Texas heat. One summer I was trying the latest brand (won't mention the name here) and I had a birthday party that was outdoors. With temperatures soaring I was sweating through the make-up and I found out later that my perspiration was reacting to something in the make-up. Sweat was beading up on my face and it was turning bright yellow! Talk about a scary looking clown!! Needless to say, I put that make-up aside and haven't picked it back up since!

~ from Rex Nolen:
Here is a myth when I first joined the Shrine the home town guys were telling me about spraying down after I powder. I have since learned it is a waste of time and it also removes that base that you need if you are working in the heat. Here is a disaster when I was early in the make-up process and was wearing an auguste face I was looking for a little more subtle look, like a pink. So I figured I could blend red and white. I was using two different companies make up for the red and white. I applied the mixture and after it was on a little while and warmed up, I looked like I had been embalmed! The bad thing was I was in between bookings and had to finish it out. That was when I got my lesson in make-up companies using different pigments and what seems obvious isn't always the case.

~ from Marcela Murad:
Don't put your make-up on as you drive.... One day I was running late and decided to put my make up on in the car. I got stopped by a cop because someone had stolen my sticker that made my tag current. I had forgotten my purse at home and ended up with a ticket for driving without a license and one for an expired tag. Someone called me on the phone and I went on complaining about my bad day that I forgot to finish putting on my make-up -- I had the white around my eyes and mouth and nothing else. It was a Latin party and they took a lot of pictures.... I'm so glad I didn't get to see any of them!

~ from Connie Kennedy:
I discovered this tip from Tricia's make-up class back in 2000 during my very first year of Moose Camp. When making your pips (the circles at the corners of your mouth), take a red jumbo Mehron pencil and make a stencil by marking around the pencil cap edges with your make-up pencil. Then take the cap and lightly mark your pips by gently twisting the cap at the corners of your mouth. This makes perfectly even circles on both sides of your mouth & then you can just color in the pips. How easy was that?

~ from Christopher Hudert:
My favorite make-up tip is for taking it off. Though I have seen make-up taken off with many things including Peanut Oil, Crisco, Baby Oil, Make up Remover, Cold Creme, Shampoo, and even a greasy piece of pizza, my favorite thing is Ivory Dish Soap. Why put more grease on your face to re-liquify the grease paint that is there? I prefer to use a grease cutter that is gentle enough for your hands ("You're soaking in it, Madge!") -- takes it off quickly and efficiently, and without more grease to remove.

My favorite myth is that the make-up is a mask you can hide behind. Actually, it is a magnifying glass that reveals and enlarges aspects of the self we usually try to hide.

Now, there are fun make-up stories from the road, both on and off of the circus. There is the time I raced Mr. Bill putting on make up, but I was in thumb cuffs. And the time I put all of my colors on with my feet. And the times I put on other people's face before doing my own. And the time Jon Weis tried to see how many times he could put on his make up in one show - which resulted in a second great story as at some point his powder sock got filled with green tempra powder and he didn't know it. And the time I was late and had to go from street clothes to full make-up and costume in 3 minutes. Powder sock wars. Using magic markers on guest clown reporters. The cockroach in the clown white. And, pre-Circus, when I, too, wore a yellow wig - only it gets worse: I was a white face with a yellow wig and yellow shapes on my face. I looked like a favorite spot to walk your dog in the snow…if you get my drift. Watch out where those huskies go!

What's going on in Mooseland?

Many of the details are in place for Moose Camp. I can't wait for the All Moose Camp Pie Fight Class taught by special guest stars Greg and Karen DeSanto or the live Fairy Birthday party by MaryAnn Porter! The schedule has been finalized (now it just needs to be put on the website), back drops have been ordered for the All Star Clown Show, and new ideas are put in motion.

CLICK HERE to go to the Schedule page- bookmark it and check back in one week when we have the NEW 2008 Schedule displayed!

Moose Camp is already half full! That is great, as most folks usually wait until the last minute to see if they are going to be able to go. My guess is we will fill up before June…

Trying to decide if you should go to Moose Camp?

Please read this testimonial given by one of our alumni. She originally posted this on our Yahoo group a few weeks ago:

I attended Mooseburger Camp 2 years ago and wanted to let you know it was the BEST thing I have ever done. Why? Well, many reasons. But the biggest one is that it gave me the skills and confidence to put myself out there and be the clown that I am now and in some ways always have been.

I went to camp thinking I was going to concentrate on birthday party stuff but at the last second I took Marcela Murad's face painting classes. That was the best decision....she was such a wonderful and patient teacher; the people in my class were all awesome. Now in my business I do about 60% of my gigs as a face painter! That never would have happened if not for Mooseburger Camp. I am painting this year on 2 cruises and that would have never happed with out Mooseburger Camp. I stay at home all week taking care of my family and make enough on the weekends as if I had a full time job, again, this would not have happened without Mooseburger Camp. My confidence as a person has grown 10-fold because of the skills and friends from Mooseburger Camp.

The reason that I write this is because I am sure there are some of you out there debating about going. My husband was a hard one to convince to let me go....I asked him the other day if he was glad I went 2 years ago....he said he can't imagine life any different as it is now because of my experience at camp. He said that it brought out all my good qualities.

Run -- Don't walk -- to you computers and sign up. I was just sitting here feeling very blessed today and wanted to share one of the things I was very thankful for. Pricilla and MOOSEBURGER!
